I suggest Francis Pottenger's cat experiments are of interest here -- as they are in many other respects.

This is my feeling. What's the point in "explaining" either homosexuality, bisexuality or heterosexuality? It just is what it is, and in my opinion, the only point in "explaining" it would be to attempt to influence behavior in one direction or the other. In my mind, that's neither practical nor ethical.

Just let people be happy the way they want to be happy and quit trying to explain "why" they're the same or different.

I have no idea why I am gay. I do know that I was born gay. I remember walking home from elementary school and one of the kids saying the word lesbian. I asked what it meant. When the boy said it was 2 girls who kiss, I remember thinking "Great! They have a word for it. There must be others."

What's the point in seeking to understand any phenomenon in Nature? It's basic to human beings to ask themselves questions about the world.

So in your mind we are not to seek understanding in any area that is not "practical" -- so, perhaps applied science would be OK, but no to pure science. No "useless mouths" studying subjects in those impractical universities simply for the sake of the subject itself.

Neither, it seems, must we ever seek understanding in an area that's been marked off "Ask No Questions Here" in your "ethics". But why should your "ethics" determine what anyone is or is not allowed to inquire into or study?

Of course it was naive of the original poster to request not to be given "political" opinions.

If you want to spend the time and money figuring it out, then go for it.

I personally don't see the point in it, so I won't be spending my money or time (unless they tax me and spend it) because "I just want to know because I want to know" seems like a waste of resources when there are other mysteries that could be solved that would actually help people live healthier lives. I'm not telling anyone else not to study it, just that I don't see the point and feel limited resources would be better applied elsewhere. Your money (not a government grant, which is public money) and your time? Go for it. Make yourself giddy with sheer overwhelming knowledge.

I just feel the first priority would be researching things that we could change to make our lives better. Sexual preference doesn't seem to fit that.

I will say that I don't think sexual preference is an "Ask No Questions" topic, I just don't agree that "why" is going to be a fruitful pursuit. If we can take care of all the other questions in practical science, then fine, knowledge for the sake of being super knowledgeable about things that don't apply to real life is a great idea.

I think most people, if not all, are bisexual, and lean one way or the other, consciously or not.

I've felt 1000% GAY LIKE WHOA my entire life, but maybe now as I'm approaching mama-hood years, I find men more attractive. Still couldn't see myself banging one however. *shrug*

But if Aleks Skarsgaard showed up at my door...!!!! Actually, we'd have to fight each other for him. Wifey thinks he's a hottie too.

Paging Dr. Bork Bork: of *course* you wouldn't enjoy a rectal exam. YOU DON'T HAVE A PROSTATE!

Based on the fact that sexuality isn't, pardon the pun, a straight line?

I think men who are overtly homophobic are suppressing some homo desires. Women are typically more open to experimentation.

Granted, I also don't think sexual activity denotes sexual orientation. So I'm inserting foot-into-mouth here.

^this. I recall reading an article with a gay porn star who said many straight men do gay porn for the money.

As for why there are homosexuals, well, clothes don't design themselves. Gheesh, it is simple people.

Seriously though, I am with Lewis, it is interesting to think about why things work as they do. It just gets stupid when people/society/whomever start assigning value to people based on their sexual orientation or other choices that do not matter for squat outside of their own bedrooms/homes.
somehow I manage to leave my intelligence and decorum at the door wherever I go. I doubt your journal will be an exception to that - not on the rug

What the F&#* is a decorum? - Mr. Anthony
