Must the water be filtered for fermenting?

    Shop Now
i am wanting to make a batch of pickles and everything I read says to use filtered water. I don't have filtered water. Will boiled and cooled water be ok or do I need to go out and buy filtered water or a water filter - that would be a real PITA.

I'm no expert, but have made a couple of fairly successful batches. I believe the reason is that the minerals in hard water could negatively contribute to taste. I suppose it's also possible that they could encourage the wrong kind of bacteria to grow.

Well, I guess I'll just give the boiled/cooled water a try and see how it goes. The cucumbers were only $3 so not a huge waste if it doesn't work.

I ferment vegetables every week. Only use tap water
Four years Primal with influences from Jaminet & Shanahan and a focus on being anti-inflammatory. Using Primal to treat CVD and prevent stents from blocking free of drugs.

Eat creatures nose-to-tail (animal, fowl, fish, crustacea, molluscs), a large variety of vegetables (raw, cooked and fermented, including safe starches), dairy (cheese & yoghurt), occasional fruit, cocoa, turmeric & red wine

I don't imagine that chlorine is good for bacteria.

Yes, I do that. The water here in Sussex, UK doesn't have fluoride; I don't know about chlorine. However, the fermentation works fine.
