    Primal Journal (Primal-JoJo)

    Primal Fuel
Okay so now that my summer challenge is done and I'm back home I've decided just to start a regular primal journal. For those of you that read my other journal, hopefully this one will be less emo lol since now I'm back to business as usual. Should be more cheery AND there should be more PICTURES! Hells yeah! Now that I'm back in my own kitchen you bet there's gonna be some hardcore food porn

I've also started the Whole30. I am currently on Day 3 and doing great! I've been primal for almost a year now, but have been pretty lax with dairy and sugar (well mostly honey, gotten rid of most of the processed stuff, other than the occasional indulgence outside of my home). The main reason I'm doing the Whole30 is to sort of press that 'RESET' button, and then try to figure out which foods and combination of foods make me feel best... and worst. I'm also giving up caffeine as part of my Whole30 as I find that it can mess with me. Over the last year I've realized that for me the COMBINATION of grains, dairy, sugar and caffeine create a major (and literal) shit storm. But I find in isolation these things don't always bother me. So my goal is to figure out which combinations I can do so that I can make better choices when outside of my home (since I'm almost 100% primal at home).

I posted pretty regularly on my last journal - I'll probably be posting a little less here since at home it's not really a challenge to stay primal. I'll probably post more when problems arise - lol so much for this not being an emo journal haha. But seriously, I promise to post yummy pics! Here's one below - i call it Salmon a la Ratatooey! I've also started a blog where I'll be posting recipes. You can find this recipe there. (in my signature)

Looking good! I got my book tonight and I've started reading. Here's cheers to pressing that 'reset' button.
Went Primal on 1st April 2012

    Since beginning Primal:
    - The stomach cramps I'd been having have vanished.
    - People comment that my skin is glowing.
    - I enjoy getting out of bed (most of the time)
    - I'm so excited by food.

Great his_chick! I've actually been meaning to order the Primal Blueprint as well. I don't really NEED it at this point, but it would be nice to have for reference. Not to mention it would be nice to give back the dude that helped me stop running to the bathroom all the time LOL! Did you get the Primal Blueprint or the 21 Day Body Transformation book? What do you think of it?

    Day 5 of Whole30

Yay it's farmer's market day! How I've missed my beloved market! Everyone's always so cheery and friendly there; I even got a stem of free basil lol. Being cute has it's advantages. Basil is like crack to me. I walked by the man's herb stand, and talked to him to see if he had cilantro. He said maybe next week. I left but the smell of his basil plants made me turn around and come back lol. I didn't want a whole bunch, just something for lunch, so he gave me a few stems. Haha I smelled that thing all the way back home. I saw someone catch me smelling it too. They must have thought I was a major weirdo.

Here's my pizza omelet with the basil. Sadly, no cheese. But it was still pretty awesome.

Oh man I got so much awesome stuff at the market today. The next few weeks is gonna be some GOOD eatin'! I bought like... 14 lbs of meet or something! That was a lot of stuff to drag back - on the bus I might add. This is pretty much the only reason I need a car; to stock up at the farmers market. Instead I look like a crazy one-person caravan sticking basil up her nose.

Speaking of noses, you should have smelt my dinner today. I made that coconut ginger pork roast that was posted on the MDA blog the other day. OMFG. Even my dog was upset by it lol.

I made it with some coconut cauliflower rice. Surprisingly, actually my FIRST time ever trying cauliflower rice in all my time being primal! *Drool*

Day 7 - One week of Whole30 complete

Wholly eff what a day. Nothing bad really happened, I'm just being a drama queen. But it's just been one of those days where the first world problems just won't stop.

I think it might be all because of this beast of a chicken I got at the farmer's market the other day.

This thing is freaking HUGE! It's bigger than my head; it's so big I had to buy a new pot because I did not have one big enough. On the bright side, I have a new, ENORMOUS pot (I love new kitchen things!). Check this baby out:

Biggest. Pot. Ever. Now it is full of waaayyyyy too much soup. Just another problem I have, lol how do I get rid of all this soup? Don't get me wrong - it IS delicious. I do not have a pic at the moment cuz I'm so tired. All the pics up here I took earlier in the day before I was sick of this day lol.

Anyways I managed to slay the beast and have prepared about 5+ meals with it. I spent pretty much all day cooking which would have been fine and dandy if I weren't being attacked by ZOMBIE flies! Yes, zombie flies. The chicken was insane, but what really ruined my day were the zombie flies.

Let me explain. My bf gave me one of those electric fly swatters. Thing is they shock the flies and they only LOOK like they're dead. All of a sudden BAM! they're flying again. It's scary shit. I've got some sort of Jesus flies after me! (sorry, lol really not meaning to be offensive, been reading some bible stuff literature today. Zombie Jesus was on the mind!).

They're sneaky though. They get you in ways you don't expect. Like stressing you out so much that you cut yourself TWICE in the kitchen! Argg. Now I can't wash my hair cuz my thumb is messed up

In other news, the Whole30 is going strong. In fact that was part of what put me into my cooking frenzy today. I might be going out of town this weekend. So I wanted to prep some extra meals to take with me to stay on track at my bf's parents' house. It's true, where there's a will there's a way.

I've also been having crazy dreams about 'accidentally' failing the whole30 and eating candy, or bread, or looking through a pantry of stuff that only ever has canola or soybean oil. Freaky. THREE nights in a row. Seriously lol! I laughed pretty hard when I found out this actually happens to a lot of people doing the whole30. Sadly, it seems that I have been accidentally cheating though. Today I noticed that my salt has SUGAR in it!!!

WTF!! Oh man, I'm so sad. But I guess I'll have to let it pass. I'm not starting all over again. I'm guessing it's minuscule amounts since the sugar doesn't come up on the nutritional info. I'll definitely be careful about buying salt next time. *sigh*

Hey Jojo! Thanks for the post on my wall. Thats an awesome flow chart. Going to print it out n stick it around the house to stop my snacking impulses. I made huge amounts of soup Sunday and had to go buy containers to store I in.

    Day 10 of Whole30

I have found my new candy!

Haha, yes, caramelized onions! I made some the other day for this recipe (SO GOOD!), and I just can't get enough. I literally went to bed last night dreaming about the things I could put caramelized onions on top of. I was planning on turning my left over coconut ginger pork from the other day into a a curry, and then putting some of the onions on top. I made the curry, but I decided I did not want to waste the onions being covered up by the taste of the sauce. So I ate them for dessert. On their own. Out of a bowl. With a spoon.

This is what the whole30 and no sugar does to you. You'll foam at the mouth for some sweet onions. I'm not even ashamed. I can't wait for breakfast. Ground beef and sweet potato hash with scrambled eggs and CARAMELIZED ONIONS on top!!!! Woohoo!

Anyways here's a picture of the coconut cauliflower rice I had for dinner. It looks less pretty with the curry on top. Like, a lot less pretty, lol.

I also made my own chicken pate the other day! Below is a picture of what's left of it. When I opened up that beast of a chicken, I found treasure: a neck, a heart and a liver! So I made pate with some dark chicken, the yucky fatty bits that got boiled (not the yummy skin I fried for chicken skin chips though:P), the heart, the liver and I few other things. It turned pretty awesome for a first try! I think I over-did it on the nutmeg a bit though. But still quite nice! It's based on the Polish pate I'm used to eating and it was pretty darn close. I'll post a recipe some day when I perfect the proportions.

Oh yeah, look at me eating all my chicken parts

WOOHOO!!! I survived 4 whole days away from home AND stuck 100% to the whole30! I even survived a potluck! I cannot believe that I can actually control what goes into my pie-hole. Itís a miracle. I watched people eat sooo many good things these last few days, and while I wonít say I didnít want any, I didnít feel heart-broken about it like I would have a year ago. A year ago, I would have said, ďScrew it, Iím starting the whole30 next week.Ē

Here is the food I packed myself for the weekend.

Pate for breakfast (to go with eggs). Thai coconut chicken soup. Left over curried pork and cauliflower rice. Chicken ragout and cauliflower rice. And left over coconut ginger pork with cauliflower rice.

I was PREPARED. Funny thing is I didnít even eat all my packed food. You can actually find a lot of whole30 food just laying around. And I was lucky enough to be staying with people who made a few accommodations for me. Like cooking a plain steak for me I did take a bit of a risk the one night though. I had 2 london broils. No idea what was in them. But they were wrapped in paper and came from a butcher shop, so yeah, I trust paper wrapped meat more than prepackaged grocery store burgers. But maybe they werenít 100% Ė Iíll let that one go though.

I managed to sit through people eating pie and fudge, and I am proud! I even didnít eat meat that was seasoned with unapproved whole30 spices. I am a champion.

Hereís the breakfast I had on Friday at home before I left for my big challenge.

It's pretty simple but the recipe is here on my blog. (I'm basically cross-posting my journal and my blog lol to fill that thing up.)

Other things I ate this weekend:

    • Lots of local in-season peaches
    • Cantaloup
    • Herbal teas: camomile tea, rosehip tea and cranberry tea
    • Hard boiled eggs
    • Fried eggs (fried in olive oil)
    • I made home-made salsa for everyone with tomatoes from their garden
    • Guacamole and veggies to dip (took this to potluck- lol and put guacamole on everything)
    • Sweet potato beef patties (made this for potluck also)
    • Summer salad at potluck (with guacamole and olive oil as dressing)
    • London broils
    • Garden tomatoes with onions and olive oil
    • Salad with left over salsa and olive oil as dressing
    • Steak! With salt and pepper only.
