Is there not a setting to make the first n posts from new members require moderator approval? That's how we do it on the Yahoo groups I run/moderate. The TV spam's pretty much taken over for much of the day now, certainly in the timezone on this side of the pond, & it's only going to get worse while the olympics are on.
Edit: A quick google suggests there is a 'Moderate New Members?' setting in vBulletin: Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> User Registration Options -> Moderate New Members -> Yes
If that could be switched on, life would be far nicer!

Seems to be completely spam-free so far today. Hopefully that means the settings have been changed.
