Believe me, when Tris told me, I was ready to go to the school and kick some asses. I know what a suicidal kid is like. Tris isn't it. I told Caitlyn what is going on and she wants to punch the other girl in the face.

Tristan is officially on the cross country team. I'm planning on getting her a pair of running shoes next weekend on June 1. I'm thinking of taking her somewhere for a fitting since this is her first pair of running shoes. I'm also looking at spending no more than $65 for a pair of shoes. Thoughts?

The more you spend on shoes, the better... but that being said, you can also save money.

Get her fitted. BUT, don't buy from the store doing the fitting... On average, you'll spend about $20-40 more for a pair of shoes at a store where they do fittings for two reasons - 1.) they're a specialized store and 2.) they will only carry the newest, greatest, and fanciest of shoes.

Once you find out what shoe is 'ideal' for her foot and gait, go online and buy last year's model (usually clearanced). For instance, if they say she needs an Asics 1260, go to stores online like REI or RoadRunnerSports or even Amazon and search for that model of shoe. You can usually find them on clearance. A pair of shoes I used to wear (the Asics 1260) was $99 in stores, but I got them at roadrunnersports for $55.

When you get done with the fitting, tell the salesperson that the shoes were more expensive than you anticipated and you'll be back next week after you get paid to purchase them.

If she goes barefoot a lot, less shoe is better. If not, get her a foot coffin. For barefoot, look at the Skeletoes. Still more structure than true barefoot, but it's a little better. For regular running shoes, go to a true running store and have her try out the various brands without looking at price, including trying to run in them. Once she's made a choice, go home and make friends with eBay, Zappos, Amazon, and you might get lucky at DSW. If that's still not in range, Google shoes with x foot strike and x heel drop and you might get lucky.

We have a Road Runner sports here locally, and that's where I plan on taking her for a fitting. I'm letting her wear my New Balance Minimus until we get her own pair just because she needed something better for running and something that fits her better. Darn girl is 12 and is already wearing a women's size 9 in shoes. The Minimus are 9's which work well for her. She likes how they feel so we'll see what they recommend. Ordering last years model seems like a great idea. Thanks!

Here's another question. What about resistance training? Should I have her do that as well? There was nothing in her binder stating that she should, but I think it's not a bad idea.

She wants me to start running with her. I'm scared to. I've never been a runner, more of a weight lifter. She does a have a friend to run with which is a help. I'm just not sure if I can do that or if I want to run.

I was never a runner but would ride my bike to accompany my BF on her runs. Really good if the runner is trying to go a distance.

I can't ride a bike anymore. Well, I can ride, but my size makes it difficult and I'm extremely wobbly.

Get a scooter. Tie a rope around Tristan's waist. Attach the other end to the scooter. Have her run and pull you while you yell, "MUSH!" Run+Resistence workout+quality time with mom = win.
