    "Roundup Ready" Gut Bacteria

I only just discovered about this issue -- thanks to the superlative Sean Croxton.

So I'm listening to the recordings of his Real Food Summit, which are all good, of course, and then his guest Jeffrey Smith starts dropping these bombshells:

Health Podcast | UW Radio | Health Expert Interviews | Underground Wellness

    First, the Roundup Ready issue:

The only human feeding trial ever published confirmed that genetic material from Roundup Ready soy transferred into the gut bacteria in three of seven human volunteers.
What! So these people actually ended up with Roundup Ready gut bacteria.

    But it gets worse.

Mr. Smith then starts talking about bt -- Bacillus thuringiensis. U.S. regulators allowed Monsanto to transfer genes from a soil organism into corn. It seems this is another gene that does survive the digestive process, despite claims to contrary. Now bt works because it "... breaks open the stomach of certain insects and kills them".

IOW, it damages the insects' guts. The worry is that it could be poking holes in humans' guts, since the gene survives the digestive process and can transfer into gut bacteria.

Now here's something that should give us pause for thought:

    At a Canadian hospital

[bt] toxin was identified in 93% of 30 pregnant women [and] 80% of umbilical blood in their babies ...
    And:

The fact that it flows through our blood supply, and that is passes through the placenta into fetuses, may help explain the rise in many disorders in the US since Bt crop varieties were first introduced in 1996
    Here's that link again:

And here's a paper on the matter:

Maternal and fetal exposure to pesticides ass... [Reprod Toxicol. 2011] - PubMed - NCBI

Sean Croxton, summing up, said that what GMOs amounted to was a massive science experiment with totally unpredictible consequences performed on millions of people without their consent.
