I agree, that stuff is nasty, and I do have to fight my dog for my beer (or give him some).

We're all fond of experiments around here, right?
Grab a critter, any critter. Cat. Dog. Ant. Wasp. Mouse. Horse. Pig. Aardvark. Potato Bug. Cricket. Goat.
Pour out some water.
The critter will partake.
Pour out some juice.
The critter will partake.
Pour out some beer.
The critter will partake.
Pour out some regular full-sugar or HFCS soda.
The critter will partake.
Pour out some diet Pepsi or Coke zero.
The critter will not partake. They will rarely even investigate. They will never show interest. Any more than they would for spilled motor oil or transmission fluid.
Humans are the only critters I've seen who will willingly ingest this stuff. No other creature I've put it in front of seems to recognize it as food or even as a handy replacement for water. Primal *Proof*? At the very least a handy rule of thumb.

Good dog.
I pretty much hated diet soda across the board, but I managed to get hooked on Coke Zero and Diet Dr. Pepper for a few years there. If nothing else it messed with my cravings for having something *sweet* all the time. When I stopped drinking diet sodas the cravings tapered off and eventually went gone.
My father-in-law was a chemistry professor before becoming a dairy farmer. As an experiment, he once put a stick of margarine next to a stick of butter on the windowsill of his classroom. After some time, the butter was fuzzy and disintegrating, but the margarine did nothing but melt in the sun.

I have a friend who suffers from clinical depression which magically went away for the two weeks he was able to stick it out on the primal plan. He is a major diet soda junkie and that was the thing that made him chuck the whole thing. Either that or he likes being miserable. Also a valid possibility.

My cockatoo goes insane for diet 7-up. She loves the stuff. She'll totally guzzle it.
Female, 5'3", 48, Starting weight: 163lbs. Current weight: 135.

Diet. Soda. Not. Primal. You needed proof for this, boyo?
My mastiff drinks cherry coke zero (sue me for primal animal abuse - I wasn't gonna drink it) 'course she might drink spilled motor oil too.

Everything else is subject to change without notice.
FIL probably also does not eat GMO crops since they are resistant to bugs =)
There is a similar experiment that shows water is bad for you.
Take a class of water and a glass of scotch.
Drop a live worm in each.
The worm in the water lives.
The worm in the scotch dies.
So this proves that if you drink scotch, you will never have worms.
