Pilchards page

I love pilchards but where I live I can only find them canned in tomato sauce. I live in the U.K. and have no really good fishmonger within 15miles. Would these canned ones be o.k or as I suspect not?

Read the label dude . I buy the ones where the ingredients are: Plichards 60%, Tomato Suace (from concentrate) 38%, Salt, Maize Starch, Guar Gum. OK so the Maize starch and Guar gum are not ideal, there is less than 2% of both, there is more salt than Maize starch, so I really don't stress about the tiny bit of maize starch, especailly when I can get a big ass can for less than a quid

If you are really bothered you could always wash the tomato sauce off.

Try Sardines.....tesco own are perfect....

ilovedogs.. college-trained ex-chef here.. go to any UK supermarket with a fresh fish counter and look for Cornish sardines, these are actually pilchards. Suggest Sainsbury's or Waitrose as in my experience Morrisons' fish not that fresh and ASDA has really limited range of fish and may not have them. Pilchards just doesn't sound marketable to supermarket bods so they were renamed.

Pilchards are adult sardines. Sardines are baby pilchards. They taste very similar, it's just pilchards are bigger.
