More journal updating just because I am on a roll...

Having a serious love affair with "tiny houses on wheels". Google it. And, by extension, shipping container housing architecture, aka "cargotecture".

Read a really, really good book: "10, 10, 10" by Suzy Welch. Best book on the decision-making process I have ever read. Not that I have read many, but this was just a beautiful, wise way to sort out values.

Another great read that is changing the way I do things: "Zero Waste Home" by Bea Johnson.

Shoot - forgot the rest. Well, that leaves more for later.

We make a lot of jerky at our house; we use london broil, thinly sliced, then we marinate it in lime juice, garlic powder, equal parts wheat free tamari and Worcestershire sauce for 24 hrs. Then we smoke the meat (cold smoke) for about 3 hrs and then dehydrate it for 3-4 hrs at 140 degrees.
London broil goes on the shopping list. We don't have a smoker proper, but Alton Brown built one out of a cardboard box and doo-dads like a thermometer and pie pan, and we own that DVD. Dude did a whole salmon side that way.

I would imagine the hormone levels will be checked - I can't imagine doing anything without that info. As soon as we have the visit, I'll let you know. Hope the DS has been keeping well on your end.

Sounds like a plan. But no Hand Grenades.

If you google garbage can smoker, there's tons of ideas out there. Off to google tiny houses on wheels...

Garbage can smoker is what we have!!!!!! It works great as a cold smoker. I'm sure Alton's instructions are worth doing. Once you start smoking you'll see how easy it is and want to smoke everything.

It is juvenile, but I had to laugh out loud when I read this sentence for the first time...

Some more, just because it is later -

Went to a fashion show held at the UU yesterday - a benefit for Youngstown women's charities like domestic abuse shelters and others. Six local unknown designers, charged with taking a meager fixed budget, using only "vintage" (read - Goodwill, Salvation Army, et al) clothing and either combining finds into an outfit and/or actually sewing around on the piece(s) to create viable outfits for different occasions, from casual night on the town to actual formal event. Thing was great! All six of us went. Lotsa church talent helped - one dude is a stage set designer, another a photographer, another couple are writers and wrote seriously humorous blurby passages that were read as the models did their thing, modern dancers doing their thing on stage along with the models, this show had it all, and then a good number of the pieces were sold at silent auction for even more money. Hubby was a sponsor for one of the designers - he got to go to a cocktail party held for sponsors Saturday night while I stayed in Columbus with the kids.
The person responsible for the event is a church member, as is her hubby. Evidently she does this kind of thing every so often, and she got the itch this year again. Models were 16 thru 60, in all different stylistic directions. Super afternoon!

We did actually build a tent platform for hubby's Boy Scout tent for the TN trip. That was fun. We made it out of 2" schedule 40 PVC pipe and matching connectors, and thick plywood. Velcro held the piping pieces together as well as the plywood (we cut slots in the edges of the plywood). So I actually had a subfloor under my tent. Which turned out to be necessary, as it was wet, wet, wet during my stay at the state park. It only actually rained once, but between the nighttime dew and us being camped just above the rapids on the river (rapids make MIST just like Niagara Falls, which then travels around - one of the things I learned...), and a structurally sound but in no way waterproof tent, I would have sold my car to get into a hotel room. Or bought an RV on the credit card.

And I am now officially a tarp-with-grommets-and-bungee-cord devotee. Pitched that thing right above the rain fly for another layer of protection, and needed that, too. Lesson: buy a modern dome-style waterproof tent before I go back; upside-down V styles have no room on the inside to sit up in.

And LOOK what I found at Goodwill last Thursday (speaking of fashion)...!! They are for Fourth, and she loves them.

More later - time for Third to get up for school.

Love the sneaker boots! Is it bad that I have the same taste as your youngest? Oh well, I am in my dotage, and so am regressing.
