I'm not a fan of gyms myself. I would sign up at the local pool, but I would have to walk there and back, and that is just more exercise than I can handle in one shot. Really, the question is: would it work for you? Have you ever had a gym membership in the past? How did it work out? If you never have, the trial membership definitely sounds like the way to go.
