Good food day today!
Breakfast: raw milk kefir smoothie with frozen berries & 1/2 banana
snacks: fresh berries (oh how I love berry season...)
lunch: an entire bunch of chard, steamed, with raw butter & balsamic vinegar, and a chicken thigh
afternoon post-nap snack: 1/2 bell pepper with liverwurst
dinner: grilled sockeye salmon, a mess of tomatoes, onions & spinach, and cauliflower
I feel very food-virtuous today
First of all... Congratulations Spughy!
I'm on day 4! Woohoo! So far, I don't feel much carb flu. When I did it last July, I felt like I was run through the ringer. I feel pretty good this time. Probably because my diet didn't change as drastically this time. I'm still eating the same basic diet, minus the dairy and occasional piece of bread.
Rachel - good luck. The whole30 really does the trick to get me to tighten up my diet. I also miss dairy and eating corn. Those things make it a little easier to eat out with friends. I'm hoping that when I reintroduce dairy, that it doesn't bother me too much. I'd really like to be able to eat it once in a while.
Congratulations Spughy!! That is such great news. (And your meals for the day look delicious!)
I'm cranking along. Had an omlette with tomatos, bacon, and broccoli for breakfast. Just had a big salad and some fresh squeezed lemonade for lunch. Going to IF now until breakfast tomorrow, a solid 20 hours. I've found I'm almost never hungry at night but eat because its "dinner time" and I'm usually post work out. I leave for vacation on Cape Cod for a week tomorrow evening! Can't wait!! A full 8 days of running on the beach, swimming, and delicious primal food. (We get a bonfire permit for the beach one night every vacation and I marinate steak tips to cook over it instead of marshmallows, so much yummier)
It is always too early to quit.
Went primal- 02/25/12, height: 5'6", starting weight: 143.0, current weight: 133.8

Spughy! Congrats! So cool! Were you paleo with your other pregnancies or is this your first? Curious bc husband and I are planning for sometime next yr and I want to continue w the same food choices!
Anyway, I completed 41 days of the whole30. I was struggling w adding things back in bc I dont really "crave" anything else right now. I did want some frozen yogurt last night, so I went w my family and got some. I literally had 10 spoonfuls bc I didn't want to get sick. Well, I felt ok. Survived. But couldn't take how damn sweet the yogurt was! I'd rather have frozen bananas and mangos and call it a night.
Needless to say, Im just going strict paleo and keeping it that way. I'll still stalk this page though
Day 12 today (for me). Feeling drained today. I LHT on Wednesday and I think I'm still recovering. Very sore legs from doing squats. rest of me feels ok/decent. I'm up 2 lbs too, which I will blame on the muscle recovery water gain? Yeah, that's what I'll do b/c I've been perfectly perfect with my food choices, so I know it's not water gain from anything diet related.
Sinuses are still acting up and I'm getting mighty damn tired of it. Think I'll call the ENT today and see if I have to have a referral or if I can just schedule an appointment. I've had this sinus crap since Mother's Day and I'm ready for it to go away. It's literally making me angry. ***EDIT*** Made an appt with an ENT for next Friday. She said I may be sent across the street for a CT scan... yippee skippee.
I think I may have to give up almonds as a snack food. I was having some sciatic pain yesterday and couldn't figure out why b/c I was eating Whole30 approved foods. I even checked the ingredients on my almonds and there's no PUFAs or anything used. Says almonds and salt are the only ingredients. But then I read some of It Starts with Food last night and the Good Hartwigs say that almonds are high in naturally occuring PUFA's. And that typically there are enough antioxidants occuring naturally that the PUFAs don't oxidize, but roasting the almonds can destroy the antioxidants. My almonds are roasted and salted (they use that fine grain powdery salt so they don't coat the almonds in oil first, I guess, since no oils are listed in the ingredients). So I think the almonds were causing the sciatic pain. Sad day for me b/c I really enjoy almonds, but I do NOT enjoy sciatic pain, so I'll give it a try and see if that's what the problem is.
Aaannd... I think that's it... I hope everyone is having a W30 day!
Jenn is it possible your sciatic pain is related to body alignment/activity and not diet? I mean, unless you're downing a ton of those tasty-sounding almonds... I would go see an RMT who does myofascial release. You might have twinged something with the squats or just slept weird or something. Not everything that goes awry is food-related! I kept getting weird numbness and tingling in my arm - nothing I did diet-wise affected it, so I went to a good massage guy and found out that my shoulder had rotated forward and was pushing on a nerve - a couple sessions and some maintenance work and it's all fixed.
Good food day again yesterday: breakfast of a bowl of diced fruit with my raw milk kefir poured over it (my stick blender was in the dishwasher), lunch was liverwurst on bell pepper and a sardine & sauerkraut salad, berry snacks plus a bit of good salami, and dinner was pork & mushroom meatballs in tomato-coconut curry sauce with cauliflowers and green beans.
Spughy, I already see a chiropractor for MFR. I saw her all year last year - weekly - for this same thing before switching to Primal. After primal, it all went away. The problem is that my piriformis muscle gets tight and pinches the sciatic where it travels through the pelvis. The pain I seem to have now is temporary. It's like it flares up and then goes away a few hours later. Last night, it occurred about 2 hours after eating some almonds. Last week I experienced the same flare up (also on a Thursday - I remember the day b/c I was in class during both flares), and had also eaten almonds that day as well. The common denominator for both days was almonds and Hormel nitrate/nitrate free lunch meats and classroom chairs (we have the same chairs in my bosses office at the conference table, so I don't think the chairs are to blame).
I will start with the almonds and see if that helps. If it flares up again, I'll look at what I've had to eat that day. Experiment of one, right?
