Have you looked into the GAPS diet? I know quite a few people who have been helped going this route. In the meantime, ghee is really good for people with anxiety.
Heya, I have a question, can you treat a middling bad case of "generalized anxiety disorder" with something primal and not pharmacology? I have always had a bad problem with anxiety and it is again becoming bad. I dont want to go back to Effexor, the side effects are a bitch.

Can't say for sure how much to attribute to placebo, but I've been having good results with GABA and 5-htp.

I was diagnosed with OCD/GAD after my eldest daughter was born (7 years ago). I went from a very low fat vegan diet to a high in saturated fat WAPF type diet which helped about 50%. Eliminating gluten helped another 25%. Ditched the corn and it helped a bit more. Went on a primal diet and hardly had it at all. I did just have a baby which has caused it to flare up a bit (hormones, maybe?) but it's not as bad as it was after having my two other children and it's very periodic. I don't think pregnancy hormones are going to be something you deal with though. I do find I have to consume ALOT of saturated fats to keep it at bay. At least alot compared to what I used to eat. Coconut oil has helped me tremendously. Anyway, none of this is very scientific- just my experience, but I had it pretty bad and now it only manifests when I'm driving with my children in the car.

If you are going to go with GAPS, find a naturopath who can help you with the process and get a clear picture of how your gut is colonized.
DH's naturopath developed a GAPS/WAPF combination that worked really well for him and definitely helped with his anxiety in a lot of ways. From there, he of course also utilized meditation -- and also found that the Life Flow meditation CDs were really helpful.
And, you might consider getting talk therapy, if you aren't already.
I have a history of severe anxiety since my childhood but that has been even more important since the beginning of my teenagehood. It was in fact caused by an important hormonal imbalance, I have many indicators showing that something was wrong with my body (auto-immune disorder which was vitiligo, severe headaches/migraines, digestive problems, abdominal cramps, hot flushes and nauseas).
To share my little experience with you, I can just tell that the simple fact of eating the paleo way, without being perfect though because it's very hard for someone of my age living near Paris in a very urbanized place, resolved MANY of my problems, and anxiety is a part of it. It's not perfect since I'm medicated for hypogonadism and my body has to rebuild itself before being really healthy again, but I am now able to meditate, to feel a form of peacefulness and confidence.
I think you're searching for something more specific, but that was my two cents.
Also, the mind is a very powerful tool to heal this kind of stuff, even if I agree that it's not sufficient. But anxiety leads to even more anxiety, and the first step of curing this problem is to accept yourself (it doesn't mean that you should be satisfied with every part of yourself), to love yourself, to have the aim to take care of yourself, and then to aim for serenely rising above the commotion of our modern society without isolating yourself from it.
(And sorry for my english, I'm french and I'm trying my best to express myself)
