My girl is turning 4 in July as well. I plan on getting a gluten free cake mix. It's less likely to trigger my inner baking maniac.
My son will be having his 4th birthday party in July and I am wondering if anyone has any awsome primal cake recipies (with frosting) they could share with me. The rest of the food will be primal and I am really hoping to be able to make a cake that the kids and parents will enjoy. Thanks!!!
I would consider myself a baking maniac also, before going primal I made all of our bread and dinner rolls ever night. God it was killing me. I think I will look next time I go to sprouts and see what kind of gf cake mixes they have. Thanks for the suggestion.
i am having a friend bake a vegan, gluten free, sugar free (sweetened with dates and honey, so white-sugar free) chocolate cake with yogurt and blueberries.
because i can't bake to save my life.
Beetroot chocolate cake!! You can't taste the beets at all, but when i made mine it as very very moist so squeeze as much water as you can out of those beets. And maybe just tell everyone its a choc cake - no one will no any different, promise!
300 g unseasoned beetroot (precooked and vacuum packed), cubed
4 tbsp acacia honey
1 tsp vanilla essence
1 tbsp pure cocoa
1 tsp baking powder
1 pinch salt
125 g ground almonds
125 g dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa), plus 3 squares of the same chocolate for covering
4 tbsp olive oil
50 g dried, unsweetened cherries or coarsely chopped prunes (optional)
Preheat oven to 180°C. Line the bottom of a 23cm-round cake tin with greaseproof paper and lightly grease its sides.
*In a blender, combine beetroot, eggs, acacia honey, vanilla essence, cocoa, baking powder and salt, and whizz until thick and creamy (2-3 minutes). ŁAdd ground almonds and blend to combine.
*To melt the chocolate, break into small pieces and place in a glass or metal bowl together with the olive oil. Boil some water and pour into a larger bowl. Set smaller bowl on the hot water and stir chocolate and oil until they have blended into a smooth, velvety liquid. ŁAdd this to the batter in the blender and whizz to combine. Fold in but don’t blend the cherries or prunes with a spoon.
*Pour into prepared cake tin and bake in preheated oven for 35-40 minutes. To test for doneness, a skewer inserted into the middle of the cake should come out clean. Remove from oven and place the three squares of chocolate on top of the hot cake; leave to melt and spread over the surface with the back of a teaspoon. Sprinkle with grated coconut, toasted flaked almonds or, for a special dinner-party touch, a few crushed pink peppercorns.
Elanas Pantry has several good cake recipes, some made with almond flour and some with coconut flour. She often calls for agave syrup and I always substitute honey. Here's her German chocolate cake recipe:

If you don't mind using sugar I make hazelnut dacquoise (meringue) and fill it with whip cream and coarsly chopped chocolate.

we have some vegetarian friends who also don't feed their children grains or sugar. and for their little ones birthday parties, they make a cake out of fruit. thick round slices of watermelon, cantelope, honeydew, etc, decorated with strawberries, blueberries, etc. all of the kids at the parties seem to love it
Thank you so much Urban Forager for the recipe. I have changed my mind and will be making this german chocolate cake instead, may even make a pre cake for fathers day since this is my husbands favorite cake ever. Maybe not since I am doing a Whole 30 and I think the temptation will be to high. Not on the rug your suggestion is also a great one but I think my son would be a little dissapointed with this, he only gets cake on birthdays and rarly goes to a birthday party so only about 3-4 times a year.
