Do you believe women could come close, then?
Depends on what you call close. Raw numbers, no way. Men are too much bigger on average. Pound-per-pound, men still have a significant advantage but it's smaller. Female world-record squat is 4.7X body weight, male is 6.01X, or 28% higher relative strength. Bench press is female 3.25X vs 4.29X male, 32% higher. Deadlifting is 4.17X female, 5.18X male, 24% higher relative strength in males.

Which of course is not to say that women can't lift some impressive weight. And a well-trained woman can easily be stronger than most of the guys she meets on a daily basis, who typically train poorly or not at all. You just can't expect to beat well-trained male athletes in raw strength.

Maybe there will be some advance in training science that will bring women up to men's level of relative strength, but as it stands right now I kinda doubt it.

Owly, I am jealous that you work out at crossfit. I work out at a lame-ass 24 hour fitness and there are only 4 people in the entire gym who can deadlift more than I can....plus no girls at the squat rack (not counting those who use the area to do 45lb 1/4 squats).

I'm cutting right now, so hopefully my deadlift will be 2x body weight by the time I get to 285#. We'll see about that

But in all honesty, I thought that it was a lot easier for guys to realize gains in the early stages. Assuming they already have good instruction and a very good idea of how the form should be. I guess not?

I've heard that women often make bigger gains to start off because they're less likely to have any training background and get more of the "newbie gain" than a lot of guys do.

I'm not at Crossfit this month, though, because I've decided that I'm too broke for it until I get a job or my motorcycle sells (which will be soon, hopefully!). Sigh. I'm trying to do some bodyweight stuff on my own in the meanwhile--it's only for a couple of weeks, probably, so I'm doing some tabata stuff and plan to work on my running. I'm considering temping so that I can afford my fees for July if I don't get a permanent job soon. I know I could work out cheaper elsewhere, but I love my gym and have seen amazing progress working with the coaches there.

I doubt I'll lose enough weight to get to 2x bodyweight much before 300 lbs. Even at my thinnest adult weight, I've never been below about 145, and I have more muscle than I've ever had in my life now. I'm at 156, and I think I can expect to get down to 150 as I shed a little more fat--I'm about 20% now--but I don't think I'll be able to get much below 150 without losing muscle mass, which I don't want to do.

Wow, cool, you own a motorcycle? Not many girls are into that :P Are you into customization and stuff, or is that more of a commuter thing?

How tall are you, may I ask? I'm sure you've stated in another thread, but I often get confused with all the other people on the forum. I'm 5'4" so I think my bf% is more like 28%... It's interesting to see progress with another Asian girl, since not many are super into heavy lifting.

    Girl- motorcycle- Triumph SPORTSBIKE.
Not commuter... need for speed. Or just a long and winding road.
Also into retro bikes... Love my Trumpets.

I'm 5'8", 156 lbs, about 20% bodyfat (would like to be around 18%). Not Asian, though, just someone who's travelled in Asia a fair bit and had a Chinese stepmother for a while. My family is originally from Scotland and northern England, and I'm a fair-skinned, green-eyed brunette.

I have a bike but I'm selling it because it's been sitting mostly unused. I had a really near miss with a plumbing van that would have killed me if I hadn't been aware enough to pull an emergency stop, and since then, I've been riding a lot less. It's a small bike, 1980 Honda CM400T. Very pretty and quite rare, actually, but easy for parts because it's mechanically the same as a CB of the same vintage. It was in great shape when I got it and just needed a little restoration work. I'm a little sad to let it go, but it doesn't make sense to keep it.

I'll probably start riding again eventually, but right now I can't justify the expense of a motorcycle I rarely ride, and I could use the cash after a couple of years of being an unemployed student. In a year or two, once I'm back out in the professional world for a while, then I'll consider a bike again. I love some of the sport touring BMW models out there.

Go for it. And even if you don't "win" you still win since you'll be strong as hell anyway.

    Owly:

Ah, okay. Got a little confused about all the Korean stuff that you're involved with. Sorry about that!

And that's too bad about the motorcycle incident. Good thing you're alive!... And at least you can take this time to go walking more, which means more exercise?

Jammies, I am trying to type this with tears of laughter running down the face!!!!!

That is my point, too: there is so much more to life, love, partnership, marriage, etc than just steak or no steak. When I married, the hubby was SAD and I was wholefood ovo-lacto veg. He went so far as to check with the kitchen at restaurants to see what the veg options were... BEFORE we sat down to eat, and I didn't even ask him to!

I, on the other hand, went out of my way to find a local source for custom-cut, dry-aged, prime t-bone/porterhouse for his birthday meal and roasted a righteous turkey for Thanksgiving.

The deal-breakers for both of us were: tobacco, addictions (drugs, gambling, alcohol,...), jail record (I don't mean for civil disobedience, either) and/or blatant disregard for the law in general, infertility (at least, if you knew and didn't say...), a taste for porn (really important for me, the female side of this pairing - I am no prude, but I keep it on the side of simply erotic), laziness (guys or gals who WON'T go to work or otherwise earn their keep), gross ignorance (the kind of people who left school in 7th grade and haven't managed to learn any more since then), religious fanaticism - hell, fanaticism or any kind, awful housekeeping skills (I am talking mummified food in the closet kind, not just dust on the armoire), misogyny (or just the kind of guys who treat women in general like crap, their own mothers included), serious mental illness, polygyny / polyandry, potty mouth, and (sorry to those who are / were at this point) morbid obesity.

It sounds like a long list, but I have currently, or have had, all of the above in the extended family (you can't choose most of your family...), see the damage, wanted no part of it, and was willing to stay single if I didn't find the right person for me. I am no great looker or prize, but I kept myself away from all of the above, so at least I am not hypocritical. FOOD can be worked around if both parties are willing and see more important qualities in the other person.

But, I do understand what you are saying. I have a place in mind - starts with W, ends in T, biggest retailer on the planet... they are commonly known for their attraction to overly-large and colorful clientele... I think many individuals there literally STINK. Not their personalities - their bodies. Even if you can smell the deo from the end of the aisle. Probably especially then. I think it is a lifestyle of SAD, OTC meds, prescription meds, lack of dentistry, household and shower chemicals - the whole crappy load oozing from the pores.
