I went Sunday for the first time in a year and bought organic kale, mustard, beets, spinach, onions and apples, grassy beef stew meat and liver (haHA, I didn't tell dh it was liver as it grosses him out, and he LIKED it), happy pork belly, 2 dozen eggs, big pot of raw honey. Then I stopped by Supermarket to buy cocnut flakes, frozen wild salmon, and organic dairy for the week. It was about 130-50$ for all. Et voila! It is however only Tuesday and the fridge is sort of empty. Can't afford to go shopping again though! I still have two meals left, then we'll see (sand? - no, supplementing from freezer, still have lamb and rabbit in there). With grain dishes we are always swimming in leftovers, but without grains stuff goes fast.

Farm Meat is about supermarket price, but MUCH more variety, solidly grass finished and/or pastured, and nice people that don't try to cheat with labels etc. What's not to like.

We belong to a CSA, so have been picking up a family share each week: salad mix, couple bags of lettuces, green onions, radishes, spinach, chinese cabbage, sometimes herbs. Tomatoes and other things start next week. I usually go to my co-op to get cheese and have purchased a side of grass-fed beef and half a pig (currently in the freezer) so I don't need much for meats, unless good chicken is on sale.

Found a terrific vendor who has grass-fed beef and pasture-raised chickens/eggs. I am THRILLED. Happy chickens! Healthy cows! (I asked about the feed the chickens get in addition to whatever bugs and whatnot they get in the fields, and she said that it's got corn and soy, unfortunately. She said that as much as she would love to go soy-free for their feed, it's just too expensive. That's a bummer, but it's still a world better than the chicken I otherwise get at my supermarket.)

I bought some frozen duck fat - sweet! - goat shanks, eggs, and radishes. My fridge is pretty full now, and I just got a shipment of 30 lbs of frozen variety meats that's filled up my freezer, so I didn't get that much at the farmers' market.

Ah, sweet. I want a 30 lb variety pack of meat!

Today (week three) of the Farmer's Market haul thread I got some wonderful-looking London broil, more awesome mustard greens (those things have a kick that I love), some of the best eggs ever, more delicious sauerkraut.

I still have a tiny bit of asparagus left, of course, the amazing tea I got last week, some spinach (that has amazingly, lasted two weeks and is still in great shape), and some pork loin chops.

Today, I picked up a pasture pork roast, smoked bacon, two dozen organic pasture eggs (still had 1.5 dozen left from last week), organic garlic scapes, organic rainbow chard, organic Japanese turnips and organic turnips. I also picked up some organic cucumber seedlings. This weekend I planted my organic balcony garden (better late than never). I planted some Thai basil, cilantro, Italian basil, lettuce mix and 4 cucumber plants.

How are the Japanese turnips different from the regular variety?

My mother planted a veggie garden for herself and methinks that I am about to score big in a few weeks.

Japanese turnips are milder and sweeter. They are great uncooked.

Ah, gotcha. Don't think I've ever had uncooked turnips and probably for a good reason too.

If they are a lot milder though, I can see why they would be good uncooked.
