I eat when I'm hungry. At no other time (unless it's at an event with a set meal time (ie: wedding dinner recently). I didn't eat appetizers or midnight snacks at the wedding because I was not hungry.

Without debating the mechanism low carb does seem to work as a prescription for most in the realm of obese and/or metabolic syndrome. I'm not even claiming primal to be low carb. Just consider it something unto itself in this context.
I was referring more to the dreaded weight loss stall. Which happens to most people on any diet. I remember I originally first found low-carb and lost weight I thought it was some kind of magic being able to eat until fully satiated and still lose weight. Then as you're weight goes down so does your TDEE and eventually you come to a bit of a halt. Then reality sets in and you start to realize that you have to be a bit more diligent if you want to reach your goal. And sadly, that doesn't involve lowering your carbs from 40g to 20g and upping your fat intake.

Cute. Your "argument" was that we should throw the low carbers off the Primal bus. I was pointing out that Mark Sisson is the bus-master and he's an ardent and vocal low carber.

I am successfully gaining weight right now on a primal diet. I'm still dropping my waist line though. I lost 70 pounds in the last 2 years, and now I'm bulking up and putting on the muscle. I've successfully put on 3 pounds of lean mass in the last two weeks alone. Not sure how I'm doing it, and I'm using one of the foot scales for body fat weight, but my waist line is smaller while the scale reads more. ::shrug::

    So yeah, you can.

I suspect that some of you folks so quick to shove people under buses are going to have rude awakenings sometime in your 40s or 50s. Good luck.

If you eat too many carbs, not enough saturated fat and indiscriminately eat monosaturated fats (almonds, avocados, olive oil etc, stored as body fat) not enough calories (stalls the metabolism, damages thyroid) then possibly yes. Um PB 101 except for the monosaturated fat thing.

Yeah, you can really tell the under 25 yos from the tone. I don't miss being that stupid and arrogant, but it was nice to briefly know everything and have all the answers.

My advice would be to eat till satiated with regard to the primal foods and go ahead and gain 1-2lbs a week till you level out. Be sure to do all the walking and a bit of HIT. Hell being plesently plump and living that way would leave you healthier and happier than consistent restriction to sub 1400 calorie levels IMO. Now if your not in it for health, then totally disregard that advice. I'm speaking as I would to anyone whose health I care about.
I am not happy when I am fat, and the weight gain does NOT level off for me. Last time I was bulking up, I went from 122 to 134 lbs eating this calorie range, and it was disgusting. Against all hopes and efforts I gained fat, fat, fat and a tiny bit more muscule. The nature wants me to have a gut and a padding, so I can have a bigger baby any time now, but I do not want to have a bigger baby, I already have one and that's it. I want to be slender and fit in my mid-life, with good defined muscles. I can only achieve it if I do not eat to fullness, just like people had done from the dawn of humanity till last century. I can trick my body into dulling hunger and making it more productive, more bearable. But I cannot eat till I am full. I have to eat till I have staved off my hunger. I have to push the meals and power through fasts for as many hours as I can hold my shit together. Pick the lesser of two evil. I cannot both be beautiful and full. For now, i want to be beautiful more than i want to be full, for longer periods of time, resulting in not gaining weight.

Trust me, eating 6 lbs of boiled white potatoes felt like a highlight of the week after 5 days on depletion.

I am reading all these books. One blames modern hybrid of wheat. Another says it's PUFs. Third has it for sugar or HFCS. And none of these substances is GOOD for you. It's great to eliminate them.

But the root-cause of our getting fatter and fatter through the 20th and 21st century in the prosperous countries, in the end, is that food is cheap and universally available. Good food, bad food - it doesn't matter in the end. If it is there to eat, it will be eaten in excess.

There is no external control (cost of food prohibitive & imposed eating to stay alive, not to keep full), and internal human drive is to eat to fullness and gain weight. It is an evolutionary mechanism and it will drive you to eat enough to gain fat.

Sure, if you are overweight, you will lose weight eliminating hunger-inducing and inflammatory foods by keeping hunger signals under control. But to keep your body fit and trim and without excess fat (that is now complacently called 'natural' and 'healthy'), you can't eat to satiation unless you are in the 10% or 20% of genetically gifted people.

No, you wont get fat. Read the books and the references (the science is there and the actual reports stemming from public investigations proving the science). As for the fruit recommendations, no-one of the authors recommends fruit if you have trouble with weight loss or gain.

As for the individuals in this thread gaining weight, as I understand it is not fat but rather muscles (since you all get stronger) that you have gained. Further, have you all been giving the primal eating a sincere effort (i.e. a year or two, not giving into the urges for other foods to much)? N.B. that I base this only on the replies.

Is the primal way the best way for everybody to reach their goal? Absolutely not, a carb based diet might be more beneficial in terms of weight loss for some individuals. However, eating primal (moderate carb intake, up to 150g) will not get you fat. Period. It will not accumulate fat on your body, read the science. The body will adjust to the food after a while (might be up to a year) and the "eat till full" effect will kick in properly, read the investigations. Read the referenced studies, articles and not just the bestselling author for primal/paleo/raw food/crossfitZone etc.

As for the carb bus, I dropped of a few years ago since its boring to eat primal. I do pizza and pancakes on a weekly basis, a little chubby but its worth it!
