I feel your pain as well. I'm contralto so tenor/alto is exceptionally comfortable for me, but I was embarrassed of my singing voice growing up. Eventually I made it in to madrigals in high school where I was first chair of the lower alto section and could easily grab those low Fs that nobody else could hit, and carry the section. However, when I'd practice at home, it was not uncommon for my mom to tell me to stop singing because I sounded like a man.
Now I'm the chorister at church and I have a church voice and a real singing voice. Andy & Grace are the only ones who ever get to hear the second and Grace loves her lullabyes.

My mom was a concert pianist, the church organist, and sang in the church choir. So of course, as a child, I was made to do something musical. The church youth choir was it. I hated it. When the choir director was telling my mother about how I was doing, she said, "she has a nice little soprano" in a very insincere and condescending voice. I still remember that moment as if it was yesterday, and it was 46 years ago.

Perhaps I could learn to sing now, but I have zero motivation to.

Well, I am gearing up for a four day fast this week as inspired by Piscator's thread on the Nutrition section. The longest I have ever done before was three days so this should be interesting.

I've always been a bit of a fasting purist, i.e. if you eat any calories, you are not fasting. But I've been doing some research and there does seem to be some merit in the idea that if you take in a small amount of pure fat with no carbs or protein involved like butter or coconut oil, it doesn't interfere with the fat burning and even may enhance ketone metabolizing. Hmm. Not sure if I totally buy this but it may be worth a shot.

So I am going to do a modified fast with a max of five Bulletproofed drinks per day (1 tbsp fat each so max 500 calories).

We start after dinner tonight which is going to be lamb chops.

I am also interested to see if the fasting experience will be different (perhaps easier) when going into it already in ketosis.

Right, me too, though I'll stick to BP coffee & an occassional nibble on kimchi or sauerkraut if I get peckish, though nothing over 50 calories to break the fast... I IFed most of today, had a normal breakfast & an early dinner (I admit it, I stuffed myself w/ dark meat turkey, avocado, pinto beans cooked with bacon (oh my), seeing as how I'll do 48 hours minimum fast & perhaps, like PB, 3.5 - 4 days).

I've gone a week, in summer 1990, on nothing but water, after 3 preceeding weeks of nothing but veggie juices 1st week, fruit juices 2nd week & teas the 3rd. I got VERY gaunt & was cannabalizing muscle. This time, we'll have science on our side....

Hey Betorq, glad you'll be joining us. Tell me, what is the logic behind nibbling on fermented stuff? Wouldn't there be carbs involved there? Just curious. I bought this jar of wonderful fermented stuff at the the farmers market that you would like. It's called green detox and it's a mix of kraut, dulse, onions, spirulina, chlorella and salt water. Supposed to be good for you and surprisingly delicious. I would love to chomp on some of that during the fast.

I did some experimenting the past couple of days & evenings, with drinking kombucha or 'pickle juice' when I've felt hunger (I've been pulling some late nighters due to business). So I feel the drinks are fine, as a kombucha is approximately 30 calories for a 8 oz glass. Nibbling on miniscule amounts of sauerkraut or kimchi would be a last resort if I were feeling weak or dizzy & salt water, pickle juice nor kombucha were solving it. I think that any food, if kept under 50 calories, will NOT break a fast ie interrupt autophagy, or if it does interrupt it, not for very long... 50 calories is consumed pretty darn fast, we're not talking 50g we're talking calories!

PB, do you have any calorie & nutritional breakdowns on that Farmers Mkt product? If so, it'd make it easier to decide whether to imbibe on any of it in the coming days... I don't feel that a longish 100% water fast with ZERO nutrition is neccessary nor good, unless one is fasting for religious, spiritual reasons or in case of extreme illness or morbid obesity.

No the stuff I bought was handmade by the guy who runs the booth so there is no official info on it. I would assume it would be similar to kraut but maybe a bit higher carb because of the onions.

Depending on the brand of kombucha it can be quite high in sugar so I don't think I want to "go there". I think there may be some logic behind the argument that pure fat with no carbs or protein will not interfere with the fat burning. We'll see.

I think the 500 calorie/day limit I've set is reasonable. Are you having a daly limit or just the 50 per nibble limit?

One of the advantages of cooking for my Dad is that he now has a whole freezer available as my storage unit.

Next month I get my whole lamb. The goal between now and then is to use up all the odd bits left in the freezer. There is a beef heart stew cooking right now.

I'm making a few things ahead of time today so I can serve them to Dad while I'm fasting. Reheating a bowl of stew wouldn't bee so bad but I wouldn't want to be three days into a four day fast and be smelling that stew slow cooking all day. Torture.
