In the 'manly thread,' I somehow started reading a series of posts on Ayn Rand. I had read Anthem when I was younger, and that was it. I stumbled upon a speech she gave that really hit home to me: 1974 Philosophy: Who Needs It? I also looked up the John Galt speech from Atlas Shrugged. Supposedly, that is her ultimate work, and the speech specifically spells out her belief called Objectivism.

I haven't dissected Rand for areas that she is wrong, but I find a lot of what she says is right. What does everyone else think?

Maybe you're confusing charity with socialism. One is done out of compassion, the other is done out of coercion.

In other words, there is a difference between an alcoholic who puts a gun to my head and steals my money to buy a bottle of booze, and an alcoholic neighbor, who I know, and I voluntarily help, to get him through AA and become sober again.

Isn't it impossible to have socialism without the use of force since socialism is antithetical to human nature?
Socialism is the oldest and most pervasive form of human organization. Your namesake? Socialist.

    Egalitarian maybe, but not socialist.

Right, this is why Zimbabwe is the financial capital of the world. Virtually all trade goes through Zimbabwe because Mugabe prints the most money.

    A) Not everyone contributed equally -- children, the elderly, the infirm.

    B) While we're on the guessing game about what they did. They'd probably ostracize someone who tried to grab too much. And that Grok cried "class warfare".

They had a socialist gun held to their head making them contribute, you mean.
