    Proper form for close pushups?

    Ok, I know I need to have my fingers next to each other (index fingers), but the question is the arms. Should they go outwards (more perpendicular to the body) or closer in (more parallel to body)?

    Don't want to hurt myself from improper form. Just standing here and putting my hands against my chest, it seems like keeping the arms close to the body puts more stress on the wrist, but maybe it doesn't translate directly to the actual pushup.

    Keep the arms close to the body and shoulders packed, it is the most natural and bio-mechanically safe position.

    With knuckle push-ups, I find the above to be true. But with flat hands or fingertip push-ups, I find my arms play around a bit, sometimes open and sometimes more closed. Mechanically, I'm sure that closed arms are more solid, but if you have normal, healthy shoulders I can't imagine damage being done with arms more open at just bodyweight.

    Flaring the elbows out will place more stress on the shoulders. Even if the shoulders are healthy, it can eventually lead to problems. Look at any exercise from a natural biomechanical point-of-view. Imagine your car breaking down on the road and you need to push it off the road. Do you flare the elbows out or naturally lower them toward the ribs while pushing the car off the road? Without any thought most will find the elbows closer to the ribs than flared out. It's just a biomechanically stronger position.

    Good article referenced above. Most of the people I trust teach elbows inline rather than splayed.
