Hey guys, I'm starting Zumba class tomorrow at my gym and I'm so nervous! I'm afraid I won't have enough breath to last an hour. Should I bring a towel to the class with me? What sort of shoes to wear? Would thin soled Pumas be okay? Cardio is the only way I've ever been able to really lean out, so I'm excited to do Zumba 3x per week

Wear shoes that don't grab the floor. In the zumba classes I've taken, there are lots of twisty moves, so I wanted a shoes with a little slide. I did not need a towel, but maybe you are more enthusiastic.

I can't dance to save my life, so when I do zumba I just run around like a headless chicken and jump alot, lol. YOU'LL BE FINE! The hour will fly by. It's only as intense as you make it. Most of the time after class, I catch myself thinking "Well that was fun. Let's go downstairs on the treadmill and get a REAL workout now."

Zumba is AMAZING. I think you'll really love it! If you sweat a lot, a towel might be a good idea. (I sweat like a whore in church, so I bring a towel. LOL) Like others have said, you want a medium-slidey shoe. You don't want to be slipping all over the floor, but a little bit of slip is good for some of the footwork. Though since you're just beginning, you might want to start with MORE grip, and then go from there. It takes some practice to keep your balance during some of the faster moves, and too-slippery of a shoe will make you more likely to lose your balance and possibly even injure something. (Speaking from experience here. ) I can't speak for every Zumba class, but our instructors are really good about short (30-45 seconds) breaks for water, and if you feel you just CAN'T finish a song, back off your movements or even stop if you absolutely need to. If you get confused on the moves, don't worry! Just laugh and keep moving, and you'll get the hang of it.

I started Zumba a few weeks before Thanksgiving last year, and I can't believe the difference it's made! I'm actually considering getting certified, once I get the money together. We had a glow-in-the-dark Zumba party as a fundraiser for the high school football team the other night - an hour and a half long!! It made me realize just how far I've come - when I first started, I didn't think I'd make it through the first class! It's definitely a workout, but it's SOOOO much fun! The hour just flies by. I've NEVER had so much fun working out before! I even downloaded some of the songs so I can do them at home.

Have a great time! And let us know how it goes!

I did zumba last week barefoot. I thought it was just a lame fitness trend but it was fun, had just the right intensity - a good workout but didn't make me out-of-breath. And the next day calf muscles I didn't know existed were sore.

Okay, didn't have the balls to go to Zumba today, so did a youtube Zumba workout at home in my living room. Yes, it was super fun, I got a little sweaty. I was as coordinated as a newborn fawn on ice skates, but still, I think I have the courage to attend a class tomorrow after work

Ohh, I love that there's a thread dedicated to Zumba! I just started doing it too, and now I'm one of those crazy folks who asks other people if they've tried it. Sure as hell beats running for an hour on a treadmill, and maybe, once I've got more confidence, I'll take those moves out somewhere

Rasputina, like you, I was about about as coordinated as a fawn on ice skates. It gets better.

I'm thinking of trying Zumba next weekend, I have discovered there is a class near me. Hopefully it will be as fun as you all say.
