More proof for me that gluten isn't as harmless as I sometimes think; ulcer

So recently I've been packing in a lot of revision for upcoming exams...well, to be honest it's been a lot of gaming/internet surfing interspersed with revising (hey, I try)

But on the days where I've been studying hard, I've found that time for cooking takes a back seat, and so I've been eating quick and easy stuff, the king of which has to be peanut butter sandwiches. A few slices of bread, natural peanut butter (well, 93%, still far better than most crap on the shelves) and you've got a meal that'll keep you filled for hours.

It'll also give you a mouth ulcer, apparently. Since having eaten those deliciously sly morsels, I've gotten the mother of all mouth ulcers on the roof of my mouth, and now can't eat without it hurting. The bitch. I'm positive it's the bread since, when I stopped eating gluten for a while back, I decided that I'd just have peanut butter plain (can't let tubs of the stuff go to waste when I'm the only one in the house who eats it after paying for the stuff!) so PB wasn't the trigger - bread was.

Despite no longer feeling the symptoms I used to have after indulging in gluten such as terrible gut ache (I've heard theories that it's a reaction from dying, gluten-feeding bacteria and parasites in the gut kicking up a fuss getting re-fed when they're on their last legs) I no longer feel anything remotely like that, or many other problems (still gives me spots, though) but damn, this is my body's way of telling me not to get complacent.

Gluten really is a poison. A tasty, tasty poison.

My son get those ulcers. He has gotten them since he was a baby. Now he is 18 and just started breaking out on his face in the last couple of months. Looks more like a rashy type breakout and not as much like regular acne. I was wondering if both of these are related to gluten.

I get the welts also though they subside quickly & then I am left with horrible constipation. Last few times I ate wheat I was freaked out to notice how it made my heart race- very strange.

I used to get a few mouth ulcers every year, until I stopped eating wheat about 11 years ago. Haven't had a single one since.

Does he drink milk as well? If so, ditch both. If not, still worth ditching the bread. I'm 19 and had severe acne as a younger teenager - even as early as 12 my face looked dreadful - and I was always a lover of cereals, milk (glasses of the stuff as well as with my cereals) and gluten based stuff like bread, pasta, etc

I got pills and cream for my spots, and they worked great, but my skin broke out as soon as I stopped using/taking them. I no longer use them (or need them, if I'm honest) and I've stopped scrubbing my face with a flannel every morning and night, and yet my skin's clearer than ever. Tell your son that, as a teen who hated acne and wondered why it never left, I recommend he stop eating gluten and milk, if it's a regular thing, and see how it pans out for him. Recommend at least a week or two and see if there's a change.

Yikes, now that's freaky stuff. Ulcer-causer and heart attack inducer....gluten, ye wretched thing!

Exactly. Hell, the worst thing I've had happen to my mouth since ditching gluten has been burning my tongue on coffee (can't stand the stuff but it's cooked up quite a bit here, so I try it...apparently you drink it slowly? huh) Literally within a matter of days of having gluten my mouth is plagued by this sensitive bugger.

Yes, he has gluten and milk. He is 18 so I don't have a lot of say in his choices but I will pass on your message and maybe he will take that into consideration. I think he could make it a week or two but I wonder if it might get worse before it gets better or if it will just clear up quickly. I guess everyone is different. Thanks!

I wouldn't dismiss the other ingredients in the bread, either.

Huh, just realised that since going primal I haven't had a single one of these!

I hadn't realised it, but that is me too! I used to suffer with mouth ulcers a lot, and haven't had one for ages - possibly since starting to eat paleo 2.5 years ago....
