Nice work, Warmbear! And your advice to lynette, complete with "love," was very sweetly put. She's frustrated, and you reminded her of the "facts ma'am." Well done--you're a nice guy!

I am really saddened and frustrated by all the posts I have seen on FB of late about both Paleo and non paleo treats. Cakes and candies and deserts and baked goods of all kinds seem to have become all the rage. So many paleo cooks seem to love to post "paleo chocolate date squares" or some such stuff. How many Paleo chocolate chip cookie posts do we need?

Drives me nuts frankly and I do realize there is little I can do about it but still.

I have a friend on FB who is quite morbidly obese, dontch'a love that term? "Death fat" it just rolls off the tongue. Anyways she has been posting all these yummy sugary covered chocolate bombs and sugar free but filled with flour and honey breads and southern comfort foods that she just cant wait to have stuffed in her face. She knows about paleo, she knows about what is healthy, hell she is an ambulance techn in Georgia so she should have some idea... one hopes anyways. She also whines about her weight and her lack of a love life and how hard it is to do her job at her 400 plus lbs and how she wishes she could loose weight like me etc etc etc.. Ya cant help them, ya cant force them to think ya cant make them understand that a 1 lb loaf of banana bread covered with lemon pudding and icing sugar and an extra large Coffee thing from starbucks is not a healthy breakfast...

People please, if you have a blog or are likely to post food porn to the interwebs, please realize that posting real food, healthy food instead of those paleo treats will work to influence those around you to discover what real food is and is not. If folks think putting paleo in front of a batch of cookies makes it ok to eat cause it is healthy, we all loose something in the end.

    thanks.

    Well said, Warmbear!!!

My sister......... also morbidly obese (350+) is always posting those types of recipes also. She also suffers from fibromyalgia and has type 2 diabetes. She has watched me turn my health around - reversing the effects of fibromyalgia and becoming a healthier - happier - much more active person. But she won't try it herself.

then I get my BIL - he's trying to go primal/paleo -- but at every turn is trying all those pseudo recipes that claim to be paleo. And he's getting no where.

Lets see --- lets take out the sugar and add honey --- then take out the wheat flour and replace with almond or tapioca flour -- and bingo!! Its paleo! Its still LOADED with calories!

They just don't get it. They want to eat the goodies and will tweak the recipes so its supposed to be "healthy"!

In the 2 years I've been primal - I have only made one dessert that was supposed to be "healthy" due to changing out bad for good ingredients. Personally I didn't even like it. The texture was all wrong and the flavor was weird.

I'm with you on this one!

I'm really not into the whole replacement food idea anyway, trying to simulate some poor food choice by approximating it with a better food choice. It just seems to me that if some particular food is bad for you, you should work hard to stop eating it altogether.

Replacing it with a "Paleo" lookalike seems problematic to me because you haven't made a fundamental change in your eating. If you are making pizza with paleo friendly crusts, to satisfy a craving for pizza, what happens when your willpower lags?

The jump from "I don't eat pizza at all" to "I ate pizza" seems bigger to me than the jump from "I eat pizza-like foods, which don't really satisfy my cravings for pizza" to "I ate pizza."

I'm not articulating this very well, but I hope you get what I mean. There are so many good ways to eat good food, that it doesn't make sense to me to simulate inherently unhealthy foods using healthier substitutes.

So true - I experimented with those types of foods, spent a lot of time and money making food that either wasn't very good or was extremely high in calories, PUFAs, and carbs - and then I realized how foolish I was. I'd rather spend my food money on high-quality grass-fed meat and local organic produce.

Now it has been so long since I've eaten pizza that I honestly don't remember what it tastes like. I don't miss it.

Not to hijack Warmbear's journal (as I do just exactly that...)

Boy's Birthday party was on Sunday and we had it at a Laser-tag place (very fun!) the place provided pizza for lunch as part of the deal. It looked awful and I didn't have any, reports by all the adults confirmed that it wasn't very good. That night, after the party, nobody (meaning me) felt like cooking so we had pizza delivered from the excellent pizzeria around the corner. I wasn't going to have any of that either, but it looked good and I didn't have anything else simple and ready, so I had a slice.

I didn't like it! the crust was bitter and didn't taste as good as I remembered. I scraped the toppings off of a second piece and ate those, but was disappointed with the whole thing, and foraged for some vegetables and an Applegate Farms hot dog.

It just goes to show (me at least) that actually giving up food that is bad for you can be a permanent thing. I really have no desire to eat pizza again. It's weird to say that because I ate it twice a week at least for most of my life.

I find that there is now such a thing as too much information... I have been paleo for almost 2 years now and I have been lowish carb high protein and way more veggies than I like as the basis for this diet. I dont count or measure except to eyeball everything. I skip breakfast and eat 2 meals a day. I try to sleep well but since the baby came I am not even close to enough and I dont really work out other than walk with the dog a lot.

I have stopped loosing weight for months now and I have 40 or so left to go. I suspect it has a lot to do with stress and sleep being an issue.

I find all the options swirling in my head, lc, vlc Resistant starch, lowish carb paleo... so may choices and I have no idea what to do if anything.

I pretty much refuse to count everything I eat as I know it wont happen so what am I to do? I have a bad history with too many carbs and I easily fall back into pigging out on them as soon as I weaken. I also feel like shit if I go too long without some in the mix. (I mean something other than lc veggies) I also get hugely ill if I get a gluten exposure or eat too many carbs at once.

I am leaning towards a vlc LLVLC style diet for the next few months but I worry that with the sleep and baby stress, vlc will just be another added stress making cortisol levels worse.

    Suggestions?

If you know you're already stressing your body due to factors that you can't control (baby) then you definitely don't want to add more stress on top of it. You want to feed your body as clean and healthy as you can. Strict paleo is probably your best bet.

Are you taking vitamins? A broad spectrum multiple vitamin/mineral combo and a strong B complex is essential to help support the adrenals. Make sure its a quality brand or you'll just be flushing your money away. Vitamin D is essential since you live so far north. I take 10,000 units a day just to maintain my level in the normal range.

    How old is baby now?
