Question Cholesterol (and urological!) crisis; guidance appreciated !

    Primal Fuel
I really would appreciate any help or guidance with this.

Firstly, I appreciate it has been covered here many times before: but I have struggled to understand the detail (even with an ice-pack on the side of my head).

Over the next two weeks I am scheduled to see two doctors ; to talk about my cholesterol mostly.

Before I see them I would really like to have the PB take on my situation.

My cholesterol levels seem to be high, and getting higher. I have had been told be 4 different medical professionals (2 General Practitioners, a large (UK’s largest) health screening company and a consultant urologist) that I need to do something about it as a matter of urgency. I have not really taken much notice of this so far (thinking it’s just flawed CW). Over the last year, I have developed some urological problems (nothing too serious) extensive tests have come up with nothing: – I am just told it probably has something to do with high cholesterol. I went 6 weeks without an egg after the February test and things seemed to improve (okay; not very scientific) – but I also had two weeks’ vacation in the sun which probably helped with general health

I have had three sets of cholesterol readings taken over a 7 month period. I am in Europe so the readings were given in mmol / L I have converted to mg / dL using an online convertor (and they seem to vary a bit from one convertor to another

    Aug-12
    Total cholesterol 243.2
    LDL cholesterol 181.4
    HDL cholesterol 46.3
    Triglyceride 34.7

    Dec-11
    Total cholesterol 254.7
    LDL cholesterol -
    HDL cholesterol -
    Triglyceride -

    Feb-12
    Total cholesterol 258.6
    LDL cholesterol 192.99
    HDL cholesterol 38.6
    Triglyceride -

By way of background. I started on PB in 2010: I stuck at it for 6 months or so and the transformation was amazing; not just physically, but in terms of general well being and health. With a change of job and country, I got derailed in 2011. I have been fairly primal in 2012 (other than the vacation). For the last two months my diet has been 45% fat, 45% protein and 10% carbs: I don’t drink alcohol or smoke.

I am overweight; but have made significant progress in 2012; the following was taken last week. My general health is good

    Thanks

Your August numbers are very good. Backing off the saturated fats will reduce your HDL - bad. In short there is no evidence you have a cholesterol problem. Remember, hyperlipidaemia is not a disease or a condition, it's just a label for a measurement. Noone ever died of it. They died of real ailments.

Now in respect of ailments, I don't know of any relationship between lipids and urological disorders. Before doing anything about lipids you must get your GP or specialist to explain how they are related. Report back here and we may be able to help.

In the absence of any ailment clearly related to lipids, resist all lipid lowering medication. It has palpable side effects
Why I don't worry about cholesterol:
    Lyon Diet Heart Trial
Get With The Guidelines admission data
    Sydney Diet Heart Study revisited
    INTERHEART Study
Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease with a Mediterranean Diet

The problem with modern medicine is that doctors don't view the prescription of drugs as a failure to keep you healthy

Some people report iodine helping prostate issues, if that is the kind of urological issues you have. Iodine can also help a flagging thyroid, and low thyroid causes high LDL. You won't find any agreement about iodine, but take a look at the iodine thread here and related references and decide for yourself.

See if you can get your doctors to focus on cholesterol ratios instead of the actual numbers. Theories keep changing, but I've heard the idea that the Trig/HDL ratio is the most important marker of disease risk.
