I usually wait about 2-3 hours after my last meal or shake before working out, but that is just because I feel better when doing so. So you may want to try both ways and perhaps just extend the period from your last meal before working out.

Beware of fats 'immediately' post workout since that will slow protein absorption. You'll want a fast digesting protein with some carbs such as a fruits to get the nutrients your muscles are craving in quickly. Take in fats for the meal after your post workout meal/supplementation.
