I have had a talk with the kids in the house. 1 year after they turn 18: their room gets turned into a guest room. YEP. All of their things get lovingly packed so that when they do find their own place it will not be a problem to move it it will be ready to go beds dressers every thing. We are approaching DSD deadline this year. i think it's fair to assume this is home for them but there is extra space that can be utilized for the people who pay for it. As long as they are in school and working they will always have a bed to sleep in. But it will be in "mom and dad's house" and the rules will remain the same as a guest, just b/c they turn 18 doesn't mean squat, i have a feeling I'm gonna have an issue with DS in that respect, lol.

Boomerangs are not always bad. We've been through that a few times. DS is here at our invitation. Hubby is Italian, and he would love it if they would all stay at home till they got married. I don't mind if they stay, as long as they assume adult responsibilities. DS does pay a small rent, just enough so we aren't subsidizing him. The deal with my kids was they are welcome to stay, and it's free if they're students, otherwise they assume their part of the expenses. That part works well; their part of the housework, not quite so well. They still wait to be asked, which drives me buggy. Other than that, it works pretty well. Anyway, I assume he'll be looking again.

Odille, I'll keep my eyes open for store-bought mayo then, but I'm assuming it's all canola until the ingredients tell me otherwise.

Health journal June 5, 2012

Sleep: 6 hours?

Food
Vitamins: nope
Breakfast: apple and almonds
Lunch: 2 hot dog weiners
Supper: ribs (just spices, no sauce, very tender), green beans, blueberries with cream and stevia
Snacks: green pepper with mayo

Exercise: short walk

Activities: babysitting, nap

Those ribs were great, by the way, and so easy. Hurray for slow cookers on busy days!

I moved out to go to college. Lived in the dorms for 3 years, a house for 1 year and an apartment for 1 year. I moved back home after finishing college. Moved in with my dad, not my mom. Dad's rule was 1. you don't have to pay rent as long as you're not pissing your earnings away, 2. be home when the bars close. I didn't follow either rule very well. I spent money on stupid shit b/c I was making really good pay for a 22 year old. And my cousin lived in town and had parties at his house that would go until like 5 am or later. I think since I was with my cousin and they knew where I was, there wasn't a problem. I moved into a house with DH (then DB) after about a year and a half at dad's.

BTW, we kidnapped my oldest grandson for the afternoon after the official babysitting gig was over. He is 2 1/2. He sings a shape song, quite properly, which includes ALL polygons up to a dodecagon. So how many of you know the term for an eleven-sided polygon? I sure couldn't have produced it if you had asked. This kid joyfully cries out "octagon" whenever he sees a stop sign. Sheesh...

It sounds like you have great fun with your grandkids! Hubby and I are doubting we will have any at all..... Only son and youngest daughter don't want kids. Oldest daughter is 22 and has yet to have a boyfriend. She wants TONS of kids - but at this rate, that isn't likely to happen. She's our "hopeless romantic" - to her own detriment. If the boy doesn't do things exactly to her liking she dismisses him. I worry about that one.

Our rule has always been as long as their in school they can live here free of charge, but need to be willing to help with chores when asked. That morphed into they can live here while they are paying off student loans so we can help them get a clean start on life without being burdened by such large debt. So - only son came out of school with $42k in debt -- he has paid it down to about $26 over 2 years, but is now making a good salary so we've decided (mutually) that its time for him to start preparing to move out. And, like I said earlier - step daughters are not likely to ever move back in with us (which is NO problem for me, since they have made it very difficult for me over the 10 years I've been here).

When I was growing up - mom made it very clear that we were out the door at 18!!!! I promised never to put that kind of pressure on my kids.

Yes, we are doting grandparents, for sure. Both Translator Son and his wife come from families of five who love children, so there is no lack of doting grandparents and aunts and uncles. Grandson #1 and I went through a long, but partial, list of all the people who love him yesterday, and he kept nodding and saying yes.

Grandson #2 did not get kidnapped only because he was napping. He is just at the age when he is starting to produce words we can figure out. And the rest of the time he babbles charmingly and intently, expecting us to catch the immense importance of what he is saying. Which melts us into little piles of goo, of course.

Still and all, I'm glad to have a break from them today. I am definitely in recovery mode. Having said that, I had better go make supper. Just got back from a slow, 2 km walk and have things to do.
