Artificial insemination vs. natural insemination
I've seen a lot of stuff recently from farms advertising naturally conceived animals versus those conceived through AI. I understand the industrial farming vs. free range animal stuff, but I don't get why the AI livestock is considered generally inferior than that of natural conception.
So what's the deal? Is there a deal?
Well, if an animal is incapable of reproducing itself (like a lot of farmed turkeys) it is probably hideously deformed and not very good to eat. Relying on artificial insemination strongly suggests this. It also suggests the genetic diversity of the breed-stock is probably very poor. Healthy living things should be capable of reproducing themselves when left to their own devices.
