    Coconut Flour & Weight Loss

    Hey my primal pals,

    Question about the primal/paleo pancakes and waffles floating around. I am interested in trying some for breakfast because I am getting TIRED of scrambles. Mark posted about coconut flour here & mentioned that the net carbs is really low. If attempting to lose weight, do you think coconut flour breakfast foods are an okay option?

    Personal experience?

    Back when I used coconut flour, the flour itself wasn't a deterrent for weight loss, but primal-izing my old SAD foods led me to crave SAD foods even more. So I find it better to stick with the basics - meat and vegetables primarily, with some nuts and fruit. Just my 2 cents.
    I'm retraining and strengthening my taste buds, one primal meal at a time.

    I tried the coconut flour pancakes once and found them gross.

    Not TOO gross, but heck, anything dipped in butter and real maple
    syrup is bound to taste semi-good.

    Try not to focus on "just" breakfast foods for breakfast.

    Once I broke out of that nonsense, I was making thai stir frys and a whole
    bunch of random stuff for breakfast.

    This morning at 9AM, I was out back BBQ-ing chicken wings for crying out
    loud.

    You could make a Meatza tonight, cut it into squares and have it for breakfast for the next
    5 days or so.

    Or throw a big ol chicken in the crock pot, turn it on high, and say buh-bye for 4 hours until
    it's done.

    Then have it with some veggies you like for breakfast... then make soup with his little carcas
    when you're done with him.

    Breakfast possibilities are endless when you bust outta "breakfast foods".

    I don't know about coconut flour but I made almond flour banana pancakes. (recipe calls for egg white protein. I have no idea what that is so I used ground flax seed instead) Pancakes are good now and then but I wouldn't do it every week.

    I think one of the biggest benefits to avoiding the coconut/almond/whatever flours is that you end up eating real food like meat and veggies instead, and that allows your taste buds to adjust. If you try the fake replacement foods early on, they're going to be very disappointing since they don't usually taste anything like the full gluten, sugary original. That's not going to help with your mindset.

    Just get used to eating real, unprocessed foods, then maybe add stuff in months down the road. If you even want it at that point.

    I'm trying! Ha ha. I had steak and eggs for breakfast this morning. I think I'll get there slowly. & You're right... With enough butter and maple syrup (or garlic!) anything tastes good!

    Thanks for your response! I actually have no idea what gluten-anything tastes like anymore. I have been gf for years! I've been eating sugar free for a few months, but I am so confused without my morning oats (gf kind, of course)! I would make coconut flour pancakes and waffles on occasion before being primal, so I don't mind them. I'm more concerned with hindering weight loss than being disappointed.

    You do have a very valid point that I would be missing out on other good foods. After all, the pancakes would most likely replace eggs and a heap of veggies!

    I eat the fake SAD food once in a while, but it's better for me if it doesn't get too interesting. Are you IFing ever? I find that if I do that, by hungry-time anything looks good.
