the kitchen in our house was built in the 40's -- and aside from added lighting a new floor and countertop -- it has not been touched - so its OLD. The cabinets were home made using the same wood that is on the ceiling of the livingroom. kitchen.jpg there isn't enough space between the counter and the cabinets to put normal sized appliances. If you look at the microwave, you'll see that the cupboard had to be notched in order to make room. so, the top of the microwave is the "shelf". The countertops that were installed 12 years ago are cracking - they were SUPPOSED to be Corian (they aren't). The contractor was a crook! Its just old and needs a major overhaul!

    Do 30-60 days clean primal.
    No grains, sugar, alcohol.
Eat 3 meals and primal snacks.
    Don't track food.
    Don't tweak.
Don't expect issues to go away quickly. Instead, just follow the plan and see how things play out.
Decide on an exercise plan you can/will do consistently during the 30-60 days and then do it.

I kind of like your kitchen. What if you just paint the cabinets for now? maybe a nice creamy off-white or something? Then replace the countertop wtih something a little grayer. I see you have a storage issue, though, too. It's a nice layout though. Big.

As a person who's only had one vacation with her husband (our honeymoon) I don't know what I'm missing, so I'd probably opt for a new kitchen, personally...

I've thought of just painting - just to clean it up a bit until we can do a full remodel. Might have to blindfold my husband while I'm painting - he thinks its a sin to paint over bare wood.

My hubby and I LOVE to get away together - so I think we'd probably chose the vacation! Our honeymoon was just a long weekend at the beach. We've done 3 cruises: the first with all 3 kids (Western Carribean), the 2nd, a 3 day cruise to Encinada (broke my ankle 2 weeks prior to the trip - so we never even got off the ship in Mexico), the 3rd 7 day Southern Carribean plus a week in Florida riding all the big roller coasters! (hubby had BAD cold during that one). We had saved enough airmiles on the business credit card that we go to fly first class from Seattle to Orlando round trip! that part was awesome! 1st class - totally FREE! Last March we took the 5th wheel up into Washington State for a week. That was a lot of fun....... furnace broke on the 5th wheel! Its ALWAYS an adventure! We've been playing with the idea of going to hawaii. My best friend is going to be working in Korea for 2 years and they want us to come visit. Not sure about that one! Korea is a bit outside my comfort zone.

In my "past" life - with the FAT NAZI - we went to hawaii for our honeymoon and never took another vacation after that. 18 years of wanting to travel and not getting to...... so, we're sorta making up for lost time now. If we have to money - we'll spend it on a nice vacation. My hubby says I'm a travel snob though cuz I love to fly 1st class, and I don't stay in flea bag hotels. I guess I got really spoiled in my last job - I was a Clinical Research Coordinator, and I would have to go to trial start up meetings that the drug companies put on - they were always at 5 star hotels - and they almost always picked us up at the airport in a limo, or at least a Lincoln Towncar! They paid for our flights, and for an extra $50 some airlines would bump you to 1st class if seats were available - so I would do it every chance I got. The meals were superb - and the bar was always open! It was fun! I miss the perks of that job! But - it certainly spoiled me!

I love teh timber in your cabinets, it looks lovely. But of course, you see it every day and have lived with it for a while and want a change. I'm with your OH on it's a sin to paint such beautiful wood.

Maybe though you could paint the ceiling, a white or off white would make the room feel higher and brighter. And maybe paint that door too, it is very dark. Could you take out just the cupboard over the microwave and put a set of curved edge shelves (so you don't poke your eye out as you go past) over it?

I would hate to paint over that wood too, myself. But it's your house and you're the one who has to live in it.

I've only had one real vacation with hubby myself, when it was just the two of us and nobody else to visit, no convention to attend. Having said that, I got to go along on his school trips to Italy, which was really cool. I missed this year because I didn't think I could handle it, but I certainly hope to go again in two years. He always takes a few extra days to go visit in his home town, which is also really fun, even if it is way off the beaten track.

I took a couple of unexpected trips this year and was thrilled to discover that economy class had gotten so much more comfortable now that I was at an acceptable weight. I am short too, so I don't feel cramped in small spaces. I'm spoiled in a lot of other areas, mind you, but we won't go there.

I've only flown economy and don't see a problem with it. I've always rented a car so I've never had the need for someone to pick me up or to pay for a cab. I stay in regular hotels - Country Inns and Suites and have no problem with them. I find they're nice and have an affordable price. I've stayed in a Hilton and wasn't impressed. I stayed in a $400 a night disney hotel and wasn't impressed. Give me my Country Inns and Suites and we'll have a good night.

Painting over wood used to be a HUGE thing with me as well. I got so mad when I'd see home improvement shows where they were covering the wood, but I guess I got over it. And considering you want to rip the cabinets out anyway in a few years, what harm will it do to paint them now?

I think maybe it wouldn't look so dated if it wasn't knotty pine. Heck, maybe even just painting the walls and ceiling will be enough to brighten it up and help it feel fresher and more open. I'm thinking "clean" but it's not like your kitchen looks dirty or gives off a dirty feeling, but that's the word they use on the shows. Crisp and clean.

Maybe hubby wouldn't grimace quite so much if I just painted the walls and ceiling - and yes - that aweful door that goes out to the laundry room! I'll have to give it some thought and talk it over with him. Thanks for the suggestions

Good post by Mark today. That cholesterol debate gets some people so worked up.

I'm staying out of the conversation on the She-groks page! Its getting heated! We all go through times when we need to just vent a bit.......... sheesh! I think Leida is just fine - and if she wants to go for the 10 - I say go for it! I will probably be very content at a 7 or 8! I don't want perfection - I just want to be comfortable in my own skin.

I heard that about that thread earlier today... I've never gotten into it, started reading it but never kept up and now it's completely overwhelming, so I avoid it. I don't like heated threads so I will definitely stay away now.

I'm gonna have to check out Mark's post. Thanks for the heads up.

Makes me mad when people start throwing out - "you need to talk to someone about that"......... Good grief! Who is NDF anyway - she seems like she wants to start trouble!
