    When does weightloss start

    Primal Fuel
    I have been doing paleo for roughly 11 days now (there abouts), before then I was on Atkins for 40 days. I had no weight loss on Atkins (in fact I gained) and was hoping for a difference in Paleo. I am working out 4 times a week doing cardio and weight lifting.
    I have a lot of weight to lose and so many people have raved about this diet (just like they did Atkins) but I have yet to see any benifits. Granted it's only been ten days or so, but I would expect something. I have been checking my urine with ketosis strips and I am in ketosis (I was when I was on atkins too) but I am not losing weight. Everyone says stay off a scale go by your clothes. Well my clothes still fit the same too.
    I am not enjoying this diet at all. I am tired all the time, I am irritable. I am to the point where I don't even want to eat because my food choices are so limited and everything tastes like crap now. I feel like I am in constant PMS. I could tolerate all those things if I was getting results, the fact I am not getting results makes everything worse. My trainer promises me I will lose, to just give it time. I was told the same thing when I was on Atkins. I didn't lose then either.
    Yes, I have been tested for everything under the sun and I am on thyroid meds. There is no reason I shouldn't be losing weight and yet I'm not.
    I am also doing a food log and have shown it to my trainer who says I am doing things right. So it's not a food issue either. I guess I am just trying to find out how I can jump start this. It's very frustrating and I am an inch from throwing in the towel.

    If ketosis isn't enough you are probably a very hard loser. The only thing left is to restrict calories as well. Naturally exercise will help but not a whole hell of a lot. Atkin's sometimes used a modified fat fast under medical supervision. Even though you are in ketosis you may still be able to cut carbs a little more depending on what level you are at now. Intermittent fasting is helpful to me. I have only ate 1 meal per day for years.

    How tall are you? What is your current weight?

    Time to start counting calories? Maybe post a typical day's menu for checking by some of the more experienced members.

    Edited to add:
    I was going to use the Primal Blueprint guidelines for weight loss. Determine calorie requirements for weight loss, then protein requirement based on approx 0.75gm of protein per pound of lean body weight, 50gms to 100gms carbs (for weight loss) with the remainder of calories to come from fat.

    With all due respect to the above posters, I would go the opposite direction from VLC. Add healthy carbs such as sweet potatoes, beets and other starchy veg. When I started Primal 18 months ago I was eating a balanced menu of (approximately)100g fat 100g carb and 100g protein. I quickly lost 50 lbs. Then I started going very low carb. I stalled, developed a binge eating disorder and other more dangerous symptoms. I am now back to my original plan and feeling great.

    Yes, I agree with Pebbles. I don't know why but it seems that everyone starting the PB these days thinks it must be a VLC diet. The key is to eliminate seed and vegetable oils and added processed sugar. You can have as much whole fruit and tubers as you crave. You might want to look into Weston A. Price stuff. That's all about traditional food preparation and includes things like grains and legumes that have been sprouted and fermented in the traditional ways.

    Height? Weight? Typical days meal? Any other medical problems? How is your sleep and sun exposure(vitamin D)? What is your stress level(sounds pretty high) and how are you dealing with it? You say you are not enjoying it and have very limited food choices. If it's not enjoyable then change it. Limited food choices? With the exception of the things we do avoid, the sky is the limit for choice. I eat more variety now than ever before. Never in my pre-Primal days would I have ever eaten spicy beef heart. Remember, this is more than just a weight loss diet. You need to reevaluate everything and make a change in how you think(easier said than done, I know).

    Oh, I noticed you said you're on thyroid meds. Have you looked into something along the lines of Robb Wolf's auto-immune protocol. It's a bit stricter version of paleo, but it may help with your issues.

    I am 5'5 and 272 pounds. I'm not sure how I can cut calories any more other than to not eat. One person suggested one meal a day. I did that for years and my dr. told me I can't do that because it will cause me to hold weight.

    How many calories are you actually eating? Do you know? Maybe it's time to start tracking what you are currently eating and reassess from there.

    Clearly VLD hasn't been and still isn't working for you, so time to try something different.

    If you haven't read the Primal Blueprint book, maybe it's time you did, there is some excellent information in there as well as a chapter on weight loss. It's not a low carb approach, but it is a sensible approach. Mark recommends 50gms to 100gms carbs for weight loss...more if very active. You can lose weight on more...you just need to find a sensible approach, do it, be patient and give your body time to adjust.

    I am limited on what I can eat mostly because I can't stand most food. There is no way I could eat hearts. Internal anything makes me sick to think about. Yes I am picky, some people would tell me just to get over it, but if I don't enjoy the food then what's the difference? I'm not going to eat something that I'd throw up no matter how hungry I am.

    As for calorie counting: Not long ago I did a calorie counting diet. The only way I was able to achieve weight loss was to consume less than 800 calories a day. Needless to say I had no energy to do anything else. This was a physician's diet by the way. We kept going down in calories until I finally lost something. Miserable didn't even cut it.

    A typical day's food is as follows
    Breakfast--1 egg 3/4 cup of cabbage small handful of walnuts (about 10-12 pieces or halves) 1/2 tbs olive oil for the egg
    Lunch--Chicken breast, Broccoli (1 cup) and carrots (1/3 cup)
    Dinner 20 small shrimp, brussels sprouts, 1 tbs olive oil to cook sprouts in.

    P.s.

    I was eating a banana or some other fruit a day but was gaining so I cut all the fruit out.
