Such an interesting trip, Candy! I remember feeling much the same way many years ago when we stayed overnight with friends of my hosts in Yugoslavia. They were not poverty-stricken, like the people you are describing, but the women (these were Serbs) served the guests and the men without sitting down to eat themselves, were bare-foot, wore headkerchiefs... I felt horrified to be sitting when they could not. And what a culture shock it was for me. I was not out of my teens yet, and this was all such a new experience for me.
Congratulations on managing to eat so well in a foreign environment.
Tomi, get thee to Canada! Seriously! It's practically in your backyard. It will be a very gentle introduction to a foreign country, in that there is no language barrier, and the cultural differences are relatively small. You might encounter a bit of anti-American snobbery, but most people will be gracious. If you don't encounter any obnoxious jerks, all of them will be.

More and more, our life has been governed by specialists, who know too little of what lies outside their province to be able to know enough about what takes place within it.
