This hand foot and mouth business sounds terrifying...what is it exactly?

Thought about you yesterday when I had a revelation of my own. I've been feeling the same sense of loneliness and lack of friendships a lot lately, as it's the first time in my life when I've never had a sort of structured group of friends created for me. Yesterday I spent with an old friend from college and her husband who I've been hesitant to pursue because I know how busy she is with work and being married, and it turns out she's been feeling the exact same way. And then I talked to some other people, and it seems like EVERYONE feels this way at least at some point or the other. So, this very long rant was to say that a) you are not alone and b) I've decided this week to suck it up and just call a bunch of people that I'm not great friends with but that I enjoy and be friends. And just to let you know that I think you should call up that friend of yours that has 5 kids and lives at home, because chances are (even though you guys are living very different lives) she needs friends just as much as you do!

Anyways, hope you have a beautiful monday!

Thanks for the kind words, Abigail.

Hand, foot and mouth disease sucks. I'm not sure what causes it (other than that it's viral), but it presents as blisters on the hands, feet, and mouth as well as ulcers of the mouth (canker sores). It causes swelling and soreness of the throat (like strep throat feeling). The only treatment is lots of ibuprofen... They're contagious as long as they have a fever and the illness lasts about a week.

Both of my kids have it. My son has the canker sores and sore throat. My daughter has canker sores on her tongue, blisters on her tongue and blisters on her bottom, feet and hands. Oh, and one on her knee and one on her thigh. It's very bothersome to see my kids hurt and know that there is no antibiotic they can take to kill it. Both are at daycare today b/c they are not feverish. I informed both daycares of the diagnoses and they said that they could attend without fever, so attending they are.

I started my second Whole30 today. I read through the "what to expect" thread that they posted on their site and it's funny how horrid they make it sound. Who would want to do it?? They talk about carb flu, the exhaustion you experience, and the moodiness... they don't talk about awesome things happening until about day 16... I understand the need for candor in regard to the effects and what happens when and whatnot, but I can see it really turning people off. It sounds like a great deal of work!!

Anyhow. Today is day 1. Scale weight is 199. Yep... gained 3 lbs back. Diet mentality set it - diet was over, time to indulge. I had ice cream, chocolate, sugar and Mt. Dew all weekend long. I'm 90% positive it's water weight and I should be able to shed it in a few days, but it's really disheartening to relose weight I had already lost once, ya know?

    Anyhow, here's to July!

Hope the kiddos feel better soon. At least the fevers are gone.

Here's to July indeed! You'll drop the 3 pounds like nothing. I'm sure you'll have as much success this time as last time it was cut short. Wish I could start with you as my weight is at 200 right now. However, July is full of a trip home to see family and friends, then family visiting me, then starting a new job, with a mix of birthdays and an anniversary. Maybe I'll catch you next month when life is a little more settled!

I'll be watching to see how you progress. How's all the other stuff going for you with the probiotics?

I don't blame you for waiting. The Whole30 is hard enough. It would be next to impossible with all that stuff going on. Luckily, we have NOTHING this month that should derail me.

The probiotic is working very well, thank you. I'm taking 2 per day and nearly all of the symptoms are gone, despite still going through the antibiotic course.

I've never done a Whole30 per se, but when I started into this, the doc put me on a strict elimination phase, so pretty close I guess. I need to look into a bit more.

Glad the probiotic is helping out! Wishing you much success in July. Your results will give me something to chase after next month. No pressure or anything

I need pressure!! What's funny is that proving to everyone who is NOT here that this works is my ultimate goal. To prove to everyone that you can lose killer weight and get fit and strong and healthy without buying into a shakes program or diet program or paying for coaching. I HATE those programs that make you pay for information that is available all over the web for free.

One of my friends posted that she's starting some BeachBody Extreme Reset or some shit so I posted as my status that today I start the Whole30, a reset, cleanse, detox all in one and all I have to buy is groceries - no shakes, no premade packaged meals, no coaching, etc. No expense except groceries. I'm passive agressive like that... lol

So, my goal is to lose 13 lbs this month. The 3 I regained, and then 10 more pounds. I lost 10 lbs last time in 23 days with a cheat in there that caused a 3 lb gain, so I think 10 lbs plus the 3 lbs water weight I gained this time in 30 days is totally doable. Agree? Disagree? Thoughts?

But, if I can lose 13 lbs in 4 1/2 weeks, and prove to them that they don't need all that expense, my goal will be achieved!!

Just wanted to share that the gal with 5 kids and I talked for quite a while on facebook tonight. We made plans to start walking at night and get caught up. She'll bring her 5 kids and I'll bring my 2. lol Hopefully the temp drops a bit so we can safely have our babies out there (her youngest is only a few months old). It'll be great to bring this friendship back. I missed my best friend! (We were besties in high school until a boy got between us... ok, not a boy, a douche, but same difference and didn't start talking again until shortly after DD was born). I'm excited.

Day 1 of the W30 was pretty good. I followed the rules. Ate only W30 approved food items. Made a fruit salad that felt like a cheat. Bananas, strawberries, raspberries, mandarin oranges, pineapple and cinnamon. Yummo.

No movement today except working on my kitchen some and doing some laundry. Too hot to do anything. Work Friend had an appointment with her therapist so she wasn't planning to go anyway, so I skipped.

On that note, I'm going to bed. Talk to y'all tomorrow.

Hi Jenn. I hope the friendship-cultivating works out well. We are so busy with solitary pursuits in our modern world, that it's easy to shut ourselves off. Online friendships can be invaluable, but they aren't enough. I find I have to get pro-active sometimes. Summer is too busy with family, but the rest of the year, I try to make a point of getting together with a girlfriend (not necessarily the same one) once a week. That often means inviting someone over for coffee or supper, because going out often wears me out. The volunteering idea is excellent too. Reaching out to someone else's need is good on so many levels it's crazy.

Day 3 of my 2nd Whole30 was an amazing success! Day 3 was a holiday with a family get-together with so many non-primal options. I went from being that person who brings the same damn thing to every family get-together to being that person who brings her own food... Don't worry, I shared... while everyone else was eating breaded and fried catfish, potato salad, cake and ice cream, I was eating baked catfish sauteed in ghee, sweet potatoes and as much watermelon/cantaloupe my body could hold (at lunch) and chicken breast with tomato basil seasoning, grilled green peppers and again, all the watermelon my belly could hold (for dinner). I know how terrible I would feel today if I had eaten that stuff, so I made sure to bring my own food.

And if anyone had said anything, I had my line in my head ready to go... I'd look at them and say "No offense, but [fill in the blank food] will give me the shits and make my hip hurt." Given they're my in-laws, I know they would find humor in it. I didn't have to use the line though. Thankfully.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the baked fish. DH said it was greasier than usual, but it was ghee, so totally healthy. Sure it couldn't have been greasier than the piece of fish that had just swam its last swim in 300 degree vegetable oil... SIL and BIL tried the chicken and the grilled peppers. They didn't like the peppers - texture thing they said, but they also don't like them raw. They were being courageous and trying something new. Good for them.

The day, aside from the time spent eating, was spent sitting in a lawn chair under the tree watching my kids swim. It was entirely too hot to do anything else. Today we may pop the thermometer... forecasted temp is 100 degrees. It's not often that we see temps this high in Iowa... Makes me glad I'm working, but my poor flowers are not doing well. I need to remember to water them when I get home from class tonight.

That's all I've got for now. I must get this reading done for class so I can knock out my paper. I always wait til the last freaking minute for this stuff...

Glad you had such a great successful Primal day on the 4th! I opted for a burrito instead of a plate (would have had beans and rice but no tortilla) when we went out for lunch, but dinner was 100% "compliant". On the days a couple of weeks ago that it was around 100F, my scooter's kickstand melted into the driveway! I don't think it was poured very well.
