well, broken ribs, are broken bones...... and broken bones do tend to bleed. Thats why you need an xray. You don't want to have blood pooling around your heart or lungs. I do agree that sometimes we can just shrug things off and figure they will take care of themselves....... but not with everything. I still say, go have it checked out.

I made an appointment with my chiropractor today. My osteopath looked at it early last week and said it was a pulled muscle. It started to feel better but this weekend the cough flared up again. Yesterday, on a tiny cough, I felt a pop. It's right on the bra line. Last night I took 800 mg of ibuprofen, used ice twice and heat at bed. It felt really good to sleep on it, rather than to sleep on the other side. Curling into the fetal position to cough seems to help too.

At 11:30 CDT, I go to see Dr. Torture. I am hoping and praying (and I'm not the praying type) that she doesn't get rough with me b/c it freaking hurts and I'm scared to let her touch it. Scared enough that it brings tears just to think about it. She's a rather rough chiropractor. I probably would have been smart to see Dr. Jay (my gentle giant chiropractor) last night, but I had a 3 hour exam to do, I was stuck in traffic b/c freaking Mitt Romney decided to visit Davenport at 5 pm last night - right in the middle of rush hour traffic - the police blocked the road just as I was coming down the street - no signs indicating anything was going on, so no chance to detour... couldn't turn around b/c I was blocked in by cement barricades used for landscaping, etc, and once I got home I had to do dinner. I wish I had gone to see him anyway.

The scale was uber kind to me this morning. 197. I must certainly be in ketosis b/c that's the only explanation I can come up with to explain the rapid weight loss. I am certainly not complaining.

Oh, and hives... holy crap, batman. Hives on my butt, my thighs, my arms... They must be stress related b/c the pants I'm wearing were washed in our usual laundry soap. With money being tight, this cough and grad school, I'm probably highly stressed. I'll take a benedryl. Maybe that'll help with this cough too.

Dr. Torture made me cry. She says it's not dislocated and it's not muscular b/c everything she did would have relieved muscular pain. She says it's very likely cracked and there's nothing anyone can do about it. Right now, all muscles in the surrounding areas are in full blown spasm mode and it's hard to breathe. It's a good thing I have shallow breaths normally.

She told me to bend over and support the area when I cough (which I had been doing already b/c it made it hurt less).

I'm going on a hunt for some pain killers.

OH.......... I'm so sorry! I feel your pain! Try to rest and relax as much as possible! Keeping that cough under the control will probably be the only way to allow that rib to heal. Consider using a compression wrap during the day. You know, those old Ace bandage things.

    {hugs}!!!!!

WebMD says not to do compression b/c it inhibits deep breathing which can lead to pneumonia. Last thing I need right now is more coughing...

I wanted to do compression too, and the chiropractor even suggested it... but reading WebMD it said to be sure to find a way to breathe deep to avoid pneumonia b/c that's one of the two risks of broken ribs. The other risk is bone fragments knicking arteries and puncturing lungs. But given that she pushed on my ribs and nothing moved, I'm guessing I don't have to worry about puncturing ribs.
