    Well my sister and her husband have been running a dairy farm for years in NZ and I just asked her.
    She said they get grass silage, and palm kernel. No idea what palm kernel is, but I guess I don't care that much now. The meat we eat has no grains, so I am ok with this.

    Anyone in Sydney, Woollies is currently selling Westgold butter on special. I have almost no room left in my fridge, I've bought up so much!

    Anyone know where to get Grass Fed butter in Adelaide? Went to Woolworths and no Westgold in their range, could probably get it shipped but was hoping to find some on the shelf.

    Its a bit of a tome, but if anyone has spare time theres a whole manual on the internet published by the vic government about when and why to supplement feed dairy cows;

    http://www.westvicdairy.com.au/Porta...ows-manual.pdf

    Its seems they use grain based supplements to correct deficiencies and to tweak milk quality (fat content etc), which would ordinarily vary according to season. I'm not sure you could even make butter all year round otherwise? In addition, feed supplementation has to be used to feed calves whos mothers milk is need for butter. Overall, I gather dairy's in Australia are mostly pasture based though.

    All the dairy farmers I know only grain feed in drought, & that's only when they run outta hay.
