I was wondering if we can harvest kefir grains from store bought kefir.

Or can we use kefir itself as a starting culture for making more kefir at home?

Which is the most reliable source of getting traditional kefir grains? The reason I am asking is that I assume different sources will have different strains of probiotics.

    Thanks!

    Try here: http://www.kefirlady.com/orderkefirgrains.htm

I ordered grains from this source, and they were perfect, very hardy and easy to get going.

An amazingly similar drinking experience may be had by diluting coconut milk into water and adding a bit of yogurt to give that acidic tang. Almost dairy free.

You wouldn't be able to harvest kefir grains from store-bought kefir, since the stuff you buy at the store already has the grains strained out.

We got our grains on eBay and have been going strong ever since. Once you have the grains, you can keep making kefir from them indefinitely, but you must get live grains, not just liquid kefir or dehydrated kefir.
