Smokers need not apply: Casinos refuse to hire tobacco users

Interesting thing I saw on TV this morning and I couldn't believe it, it was so strange to me to hear this: but it looks like the casinos they'll be opening up here in Ohio aren't hiring smokers because of the health care costs associated.

    Here's the associated news story.

And it does worry me a bit. If they refuse to hire smokers, will the next step be refusing to hire obese people (Me)? People who used to be obese but lost weight? People who eat too much fat (Primal)? People who have been diagnosed with a condition like cancer, diabetes or hypertension in the past...?

Ok, that's probably me just being paranoid... but I worry...

What about the second hand smoke in the workplace? I don't care how they try to filter it, casino air is nasty!

There's another issue, which is exposing casino guests and co-workers to second or third hand smoke.

This kind of thing is not even news to me; back before I had kids ( and my eldest is 14) I used to nanny a kid whose parents worked at Swedish Hospital. They had a no smokers policy at that time.

There are already laws against indoor smoking.

They don't apply to NA/Tribal casinos. And unless they change the federal laws, they are the only casinos allowed outside of Nevada and Atlantic City.

Uh... there are casinos in Indiana. I went to the Grand Victoria a few years back, one of the machines was being nice to me, it might as well have been an ATM machine. I got about 300 dollars out of it. But the smoke! My eyes stung for hours after leaving that place, and I had to take a shower because I smelled like an ashtray.

Then the next time I went back, I guess they had banned the smoking. The air wasn't blue anymore. I didn't win anything...

Oh really? I had no idea, having never been in a casino. I thought the laws applied everywhere.

NA/Tribal is considered a sovereign nation and therefore not required to enforce (some) American laws. For example, they have their own law enforcement and city/county police have no jurisdiction on tribal lands. Casinos have become an industry~ source of income~ for the tribes~

    Maybe AZ played a part~
    from History & Culture

During the early 1990s, the several tribal casinos, including Fort McDowell, were in operation in Arizona. In accordance with the provisions of the federal 1988 Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, the tribes were waiting to sign gaming compacts with the state government. At the time, however, the governor opposed Indian gaming and called upon the U.S. Attorney's office for support. Unannounced raids by FBI agents on five Indian casinos were ordered. At the first light of day on May 12, 1992, the agents invaded the Fort McDowell casino seizing the community's 349 gaming machines and loading them into moving trucks. Community members witnessing the raid took immediate action. They called other community members, tribal leaders and the news media. Soon, using every available car, truck, and heavy machinery, a blockade of the casino's access road was organized. The violence, a three-week standoff between tribe and government ensued. The Arizona governor ultimately was persuaded to sign a gaming compact with the tribe, thus paving the way for Indian gaming in Arizona. May 12 is now a tribal holiday.

If they are not willing to hire any smokers,my guess is that they will ban smoking on the premises. I know the casino I've been to in Oregon is smoke free inside. Our local Providence health campus is smoke free and they announced recently that effective on the day of the great alaska smokeout they would no longer hire smokers.

Thanks for reinforcing everything I've been hearing since my childhood, dado.

    I suck.

I am a worthless piece of shit.

    I'm not normal.

What a horrible creature I am.

    I don't deserve any respect.

Why don't I go shoot myself and die.

I thought this was a more supportive board but obviously I was wrong.

    I see why Griff left.
