aug 2010 lipids (slacker)
- Chol 228
- HDL 60
- Trig 119
- LDL 144
- Chol/HDL 3.8 (ideal = <4.4 )
- LDL/HDL 2.4 (ideal = <4.3)
- Trigs/HDL 1.99 (ideal = <2 )
Griff, If I follow you on this, the ratios are not too bad. And one hopes LDL comes down after a longer time on primal. No? TIA!

Slacker: I'm still waiting for my LDL to come down and my HDL to rise, so you're not alone. I'd say those ratios look pretty good, and of course the most vital one - trig/HDL - looks fantastic.

The ratios and numbers recorded on my lipid test report seem to be a bit different, but if I'm understanding all of this, the results are good, even though total cholesterol is "high." Am I interpreting them correctly?
LDL/HDL ratio 1.3
Cholesterol, non-HDL 142

Liza, just look at your ratios!
Total/HDL = 2.6 where 4.4 or below is ideal for a woman
Trig/HDL = 1.1 where 2 or below is ideal
LDL/HDL = 1.3 where 4.4 or below is ideal
You have numbers I'd kill for. Remember, the absolute numbers are not as important as your ratios!

Thanks, Griff. That's what I thought, but of course the report came back with the 233 total cholesterol flagged as high. My doctor's only comment about the test result was that it wasn't something to be too concerned about.

Have you come across any info indicating taking fish oil close to having a lipid panel done skews the results?

No, I haven't, but that doesn't mean it isn't out there. Have you found anything on that?

Recent cholesterol profile after three months of primal-ness
I've been primal now for three months, and got my first blood test results back:
*the sheet had "calc" next to my LDL and VLDL, which I assume means that those numbers were calculated as opposed to explicitly tested for? Does this mean I'd be better off having those tested for as opposed to using a ratio to calculate them? And is that even possible?
I know my ratios are OK, but I read on the Mayo Clinic website from a physician that said that looking at ratios is helpful but not as meaningful as the overall number of LDL in preventing heart disease. I've read the PB, so I know I'm supposed to be satisfied with my numbers. But I'd be lying if I said that a 255 number doesn't concern me.
Griff or others, your thoughts/research on my profile would be most welcome!

I read on about.com's thyroid board about LDL and total cholesterol being higher if fish oil was taken within 3 days of the test.
