I'm so jealous; I can't find grass-fed ghee anywhere I look. I would have to make it, and I'm not quite at that point yet ;-)

@close to $10.00/jar of ghee ( not grass fed either)~1lb vs $5.60 for 2 1/2lb blocks of Kerry gold ( organic valley & smjor are more expensive) its cheaper to make it! It took me a couple of times to figure out my method but I can make ghee in a out 45 min. And it's so tasty!

I know you heat it to separate it (the cream/dairy), in a half pound block, how much ghee do you end up with? What I guess I am asking, is how much is separated.. what is the yield?

If you bought the BIG jar of ghee (blue label w/the cow on it) ~1lb. Two 1/2lb blocks of Kerry gold fills that jar. There are some great instructions on the web for making ghee I started there and modified it based off of my stove (depends on whic burner I'm using as to how long it takes)

Butter is about ~10% milk solids. You also lose some in the coffee filter. Still cheaper than the jar.

Is clarified butter the same as ghee? I'm always afraid I'll burn the fat along with the milk solids, so I clarify using a ziplock bag as a separatory funnel.
5'0" female, 43 years old. Started Primal October 31, 2011, at a skinny fat 111.5 lbs. Low weight: 99.5 lb on a fast. Current weight: skinny-fat 106.5 lbs because of sugar cheating.

MY PRIMAL: I (try to) follow by-the-book primal as advocated by Mark Sisson, except for whey powder and a bit of cream. I aim for 80-90 g carb/day and advocate a two-month strict adjustment for newbies. But everybody is different and other need to tweak Primal to their own needs.

Yep Clarified butter and ghee is the same thing. But I think sometimes the melting time can vary. I read if you melt it longer till it browns a little its more caramaly tasting. But I don't leave it that long when I make it.
