    Question Saturated Fat & Cholesterol

    Primal Fuel
Since 2004 I found and adhered to the ZONE diet.
In fall 2011 I found Primal, and modified my Zone eating to incorporate Primal.
Not a big change, moved to grainless, grass-fed meats, and added back some Sat Fat from grass-fed.
And more nuts. However I am concerned because my recent blood test is alarming? (maybe?)
    .
    Pre_Zone: April 2004 Tot Cholesterol 285, TriG 160, HDL 40, LDL 213, TriG/HDL Ratio 4.00
    Zone: June 2011 Tot Cholesterol 174, TriG 40, HDL 66, LDL 100, TriG/HDL Ratio .61
    Z + Primal: Jan 2012 Tot Cholesterol 238, TriG 57, HDL 67, LDL 160, TriG/HDL Ratio .85
    VLDL (not measured before) 11
    .
    Is this reason for concern?

    I see a few things.

1st: I think cutting the grains is a good thing so that's not the issue in my opinion.

2nd: Adding in the nuts and what not, do you know your ratio of O-3/O-6 fats?

3rd: Adding in more saturated fat, may need to find out what your ApoE is. If you're an ApoE 4 genotype you have to limit the amount of saturated fats. That could be my next test to find out.
Self-realization. I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, "... I drank what?"

Thx, and no, I do not know O-3/O-6 (yet) - another blood test, waiting on results.
Though I do take a good Omega-3 capsule, daily.
    4 grams daily Fish Oil, 60% Omega-3 in a 2:1 ratio of EPA/DHA
    4 x 1000 g FO daily = daily 1600mg EPA, 800mg DHA = 2400mg combined.

Fish oil raises a big red flag. For some people it seems to result in pretty wacky cholesterol readings, potentially for a number of different reasons. When did you start the fish oil supplements?

Started Fish Oil in 2004. Total Cholesterol went from 285 down to 224 in 3 months,
    combined with diet change.
    .
I'll note that I was using Benecol (noted to help lower cholesterol) from 2004 to summer 2011.
In late summer 2011, I switched to grass-fed butter and added eggs (pastured) into eating.
