I had a pair of Doc Martin's very soft sole and they always hurt me.
I wish the vff fit me but they don't. Merrel has a new barefoot shoe, looks more like a traditional shoe that I am looking at getting now that they seem to be coming out in wider widths.

you might want to take a look at Paleo Runners or similar sites as they have some good advice strengthening your feet.
