    Primal Fuel

Last night we visited my mother-in-law, and in the course of conversation, she asked us why it was a problem to eat grains and what was wrong with eating gluten. As a result, we got to tell her a *lot* about the PB - without using those words, of course - and she seems to be interested. She said "I need to get off these cholesterol medications," and she was stunned when she heard that not only my arthritis but my migraines went away when I stopped eating wheat, because she has migraines and has been told nothing will fix them.

Of course, the usual "But what do you EAT?" question came up, but when I described our meals (steak, eggs, high-fat ground beef, dark-meat chicken with skin, big salads with no starchy veggies... you know the drill) then we had to explain how no, cholesterol is not bad if your HDL is high and your trigs are low... She said "but where do you get your potassium?" and I said "vitamin supplements and red meat." She boggled more than once.

She has migraines, high cholesterol (not the good kind) and high blood pressure, while her husband has severe type II diabetes and has lost a leg to it already. They desperately need the PB. She mentioned they were thinking of trying Weight Watchers and I begged them not to. I said "Please, please, PLEASE don't go on Weight Watchers. It will kill you." I explained about how a calorie is not just a calorie, about how different macronutrients do different things for (and to) the body, about how we need to eat saturated (not trans) fats and how we need to avoid carbohydrates and starches, and she actually listened. It was amazing.

Of course, she has most of the major CW misconceptions, like "juice is good for you" and "you have to eat five helpings of fruits every day" and "fat is bad for you" and "cholesterol will kill you," but we covered those, and more importantly explained WHY they're misconceptions. I explained how blaming cholesterol for heart disease is like blaming a bandage for the wound beneath it, or blaming firemen for a fire, and she got it, although she looked really bemused and bewildered there for a while.

I gave her one of my Primal cards and urged her to look at the resources on it, starting with the Taubes lecture video. She said she would.

It was a good discussion, and one I never, ever thought I'd have with my dinner-is-lean-meat-and-lots-of-potatoes mother-in-law. This is a big, big step for her, and I'm pleased.

Primal eating in a nutshell: If you are hungry, eat Primal food until you are satisfied (not stuffed). Then stop. Wait until you're hungry again. Repeat.

    Wow!

Good for you - and more importantly, good for her!!

I hope she does watch the videos, and nice one for having you primal card to hand. Good analogies too (the firemen) - mind if I pinch them for future use?

That is sooooo awesome. Sounds like a dream come true. I wish my dad would go to the Primal side - he's not super-unhealthy or anything, but he could be so much healthier... he's in the "eat less, exercise more" mindset and believes fat is bad, etc... eats cereal and 1% milk for breakfast, whatever for lunch, and a frozen "healthy" dinner.

What is a "primal card" hat you gave her?

Eating lots but still hungry? Eat more fat. Mid-day sluggishness? Eat more fat. Feeling depressed or irritable? Eat more fat. People think you've developed an eating disorder? Eat more fat... in front of them.

About the Primal Cards: I went to zazzle.com and had some "fat" business cards made up with resources on them so that I didn't have to try to remember and write them down every time someone got interested. I need to order more of them.

One side says: For an explanation of the science behind the low-carb/paleo way of living, please view: http://www.dhslides.org/mgr/mgr060509f/f.htm

    The other side says:

    Low-Carb and Paleo Resources

    Websites: http://www.marksdailyapple.com

    http://www.proteinpower.com

    Books:

Protein Power LifePlan by Michael and Mary Dan Eades, MDs

The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson

Eat Fat, Lose Fat by Dr. Mary Enig and Susan Fallon

Good Calories, Bad Calories, by Gary Taubes, Ph.D.

The card has a "caveman" design on it; it's actually pretty cool.

Parents are hard to convince. It took me at a very long time before mine started to listen to little bits of info.

It's hard for them to accept that they may have done a less than perfect job of raising their kids, especially if they did the best they could with the info they had. It can easily come across sounding like it was their fault that you have problems (due to diet).

We've got my parents on a pretty decent diet now and we always get a 100% paleo meal when we eat there. It's nice to know that our kids can stay over and the worst thing they will get spoiled with is a handful of blueberries.

    That's awesome, Griff!!!

My friends are admittedly non-primal- but they see the changes in me, and... now they're thinking.

    It's a start :-)
