    Sugar Out of Control

    Shop Now
I come from a vegetarian background, but have been eating meats for the past year...this is as primal as I can seem to make it. Every time I try going primal I go on sugar binges. I mean that very literally. (side note: I'm skinny, so I'm not here to lose weight, but I have other health issues that I want to help).

I lasted 2 days primal, and then a week of nothing but sugar. For example, my supper yesterday was kettle corn, cinnamon/sugar coated nuts, and rolls. My supper today was even worse--Halloween candy and a "natural" orange soda. I don't usually have THAT bad of a diet, but I have been craving AND eating candy all day, and I have no desire for meat, or dairy or anything else. What is wrong with my brain/body chemistry that is making me so out of whack? I know that having candy for 2 out of 3 meals today (and a cinnamon roll for breakfast) is horrid, but I do it anyway, and can't seem to stop myself, and I like it. And I just want MORE...

except I know this is not right...

I feel like my conscience and my brain/body are not connected.

    HELP!!!

Throw out the candy and gorge on sweet potatoes and blueberries if you must! But it sounds like you might be craving something you aren't getting, or maybe your hunger hormones are off-kilter. Remember that it takes more than two days to get into good ketosis and off the sugar roller-coaster. And usually the second or third day can be the most difficult.

How much fat are you eating?

If i was you I would approch this from an "atkins" style approch to kick off a good keto. It sounds like you have a massive "carb flu" that you may need to fight through.

2 weeks less than 20g of carbs a day. Got nothing to loose trying it right? Also if you get a craving for sugar, eat some bacon...

My concern about going so low on carbs is that I am already underweight. I don't think I can do a drastic 180 on my diet, because that's when I fail and end up eating worse, so I think I have to ease myself into it.

I wonder if Knifegill might be right that I'm craving something that I'm not getting...maybe enough calories? or something else I might be missing?

Knifegill asks a great question. How much fat are you eating? The carbs we reduce here are from grain. And grains acts in your body just as sugar does and keeps your cravings alive.

Have a banana if you want a sweet. It really helps me.

Fruit. Fruit, fruit, fruit. If you're gonna have the sugar, eat the fruit. And a handful of nuts. Nom!

^^^---This! Another way to get by is with smoothies. My wife had multiple homemade fruit smoothies everyday when we first switched over. A cup (or can for more fat) of coconut milk, a banana, and a bunch of frozen strawberries does the trick and is really simple!

Two days in not NEARLY enough time to get past the carb-flu!! People are different, some can partake on rare occasions ("moderation") and it never bothers them... then there are those of us where all it takes is a bite or two of sweet and we've got to almost start over.

I found that upping the good fats and going almost totally carnivore -- yup, avoided fruits and veggies for a week -- got me through it the first time...and each time I have 'slipped' since them!

You have a choice, the sugar is not jumping into your mouth, you are putting it there. You need to decide to make it work or not.

Don't worry about weight loss if you go low carb. Low carb simply flattens your insulin curve which allows your body weight to normalize. You won't waste away. Eat enough protein and fat and you'll do fine.
