    Is this a prickly pear?

    Does anybody know how to eat one? Sorry I don't know how to post an image on the forum but I took a photo, here:

    it is a prickly pear, just remove the skin and eat it raw, its pretty good actually. only thing is it has a huge amount of seeds in them. so ur gonna be spitting out a quite a few, think watermelon times 10 with the seeds.

    Yes, it is a prickly pear.

    You can juice it, make sorbet, jelly, vinaigrette, fruit salad, put it in cocktails ... anything sweet.

    You need to peel it first. The best way is to slice off both ends and toss them. Then make a lengthwise cut from end to end and pull the skin off. It is full of seeds but they are ok to eat if you like them.

    You can chew the seeds if you want - they can be a little hard.

    Fun! Thanks! I'll eat this one straight and see if I want to pursue any additional uses. Sorbet and jelly are probably beyond me but you never know. Thanks for the stain tip -- i am the queen of staining my clothes so the heads up is very appreciated.

    i remember it to be like a pomegranate - so many seeds! But it has a nice flavor, kinda watermelon-ish. I only eat them when i've just found one on the cactus and the birds haven't gotten to it first. (we don't have cactus in houston, they're in the hill country).

    Sooooory. That is not a prickly pear. That is a "tuna" which is the fruit of a prickly pear cactus.

    Well yeah. If you wanna be technical about it. But it IS a prickly pear fruit. And I like em! I need to try eating the pads one of these days too!

    i've had those, i forget their name in spanish, too lazy to google. ooh it just came to me - nopales? Anyway, it was in a stew, kinda vegetably & beefy, from a taqueria. It was good, but not so great i'd want it again. I think you can get them in little cans like jalapenos. I hate canned jalapenos so maybe i hate canned cactus pads too, b/c i'm pretty sure that's what the taqueria used. Maybe they're better fresh.
