    I'm a recovering Vegan (what a trip I'm glad that I'm not on anymore!). My hair started to fall out, I got really weak and very angry.

    Onto fruit - I love fruit and want to eat a lot but always find I get fatter?Does anyone else find this, almost within the first week. I had great results with the metabolic-typing diet a few years back but it really restricted how much fruit I can eat. I like at least 5 pieces a day. How much fruit can you eat on this lifestyle and not get fat or risk diabetes? I just want to know how many pieces each day is ok.

    I just don't get how some people can eat lots of fruit and stay thin?? Like this girl. There is a good chance she could by lying about how fruit she eats.

    Everyone is different, but you don't want to consume a whole lot of fructose no matter how thin you stay. Have some berries if you want some fruit.

    Thank you so much for answering :-) What is wrong with consuming lots of fructose? I'm sorry if the answer is obvious I'm new to all this.
    Ooh I love berries too! How much can I have and why berries?

    Lots of fructose will spike your blood glucose levels. This is bad- consistently high blood glucose levels leads to diabetes.

    Remember, you are on a website about the Primal Blueprint. That means it is a general guideline, but you have to work through things on your own, experiment, and figure out if your body can handle it while meeting your goals. This is not a prescriptivist, "you-can-only-eat-what-I-tell-you-to-eat" kind of "diet". What works for other people might not work for you. Maybe you can't have berries and still meet your goals. I don't know. You have to figure that out on your own.

    Berries tend to have lower fructose levels and more nutrients than a lot of other fruits.

    A bit of a scientific correction there. Fructose will not spike your blood glucose. It will spike your blood fructose.

    But high blood fructose levels aren't good for you either. Fructose is metabolized by your liver differently then glucose. Fructose is metabolized into triglycerides and stored as fat much more readily than other types of sugar.

    So fruit is less likely to trigger diabetes but it will make you fat.

    If you are really interested in understanding how sugars are metabolized this is a good lecture. It's about an hour and a half and goes into a lot of the science but is well done and well spoken. Give it a look!

    So. As to the OPs original question. 5 pieces of fruit is a lot of fruit. And if you are noticing weight gain then your body obviously thinks it's too much fruit also.
    For most people, eating that much fruit seems to be just another way to eat sweet sugary things. They WOULD be eating a candy bar but fruit is 'healthier'. Its best to just break the sweet habit!

    It's because they have a different metabolic type than we do. If that woman started eating low carb, she would feel like crap because she actually needs high carbs to function and feel well. One diet does not fit all. The key is to find what fits FOR YOU.

    Ok great advice from everyone thank you. Things are starting to make more sense.

    I am going to eat berries and low sugar fruits and aim for definitely less than 5 pieces after reading your responses. I guess I need to remember we are individuals and our bodies react differently to different diets.
    Does anyone have candida problems? I've been trying to get a handle on mine for YEARS. Any tips would be fantastic. It's great to find such a helpful forum finally thank you.

    if u have candida i would seriously suggest no sugar in any form. sugar feeds candida. thing is every1 in the world has candida strand in their system. its just that the overgrowth comes when the good bacteria in ur gut is dieing off, due to dif things like antibiotics, steroids and such. i would recommend a probiotic and some small amounts of coconut oil(anti-fungal/viral) i say small amounts cause u can kill the candida quite quickly if u take a few tbs of it, and u get the die off effect which is like the flu. u should find out if u really do have candida from a GI specialist.

    I have cadida too, have had it for more than a decade. First thing, you have to cut sugar. I didn't eat any fruit but the occasional bowl of berries for 5 months. Only recently did I introduce half a banana 3-4 times weekly as I was starting to feel weak. I needed more carbs. I also eat 1 teaspoons of coconut oil after breakfast and lunch. Not in the PM as it will keep you awake all night. I take pro-biotics on an empty stomach morning and evening. My candida is better but still there. Not sure how long it's supposed to take, but if worse comes to worse I'll cut my berries/banana out altogether.

    Thank you for your time. About candida - I get confused because some say "cut out fat" and others say "cut out sugar", wouldn't it work too if I cut out a lot of fat? I've heard that the fat keeps the sugar in the blood too long then it feeds candida? I could be totally wrong but I'm regurgitating what I've heard. I just really grouchy when I don't have sugar because I have a really big sweet tooth and don't we need carbs to function properly? (remember i'm coming from the vegan (interested in raw vegan) movement so I've been told different things! I'm sorry I just want to get clear because I'm so confused. Thanks for having patience with me.
