Because its a more broad term meaning that we believe in the general principles of eating like our long lost healthy ancestors. There are a lot of variations of paleo but since there really aren't a huge number of us... the general term is sometimes easier to throw around. I usually say Primal, but when I search for others or put it on facebook I'll certainly mention paleo. It's almost like the difference between Vegan and Vegeterianism.
my point is how is it paleo to eat greek yogurt or potatoes? ive been told not to eat them....

I dont think being "told not to eat" something is a reason not to eat it. You should make your own decision based on your own research and how the food affects you.
Technically strict paleo would not eat either. Primals may or may not decide to eat them.. decide for youself, read this:

Paleo allows one to three cheat meals a week + there are deviations for athlets, which include tubers and dairy, depending on which author you go with.

When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.
The stance on potatoes is pretty moronic, it's real food, eat it. Don't feel morally superior because you eat sweet potatoes either.
Forget about the labels, it's easy when conversing with other "paleos/primals" to identify yourself as one, but don't confine your eating to just what either thing says, especially when it comes to something that gets a bad rep for no good reason.
This doesn't mean gorge on potatoes, but if you're even remotely active, they can't hurt you. Stay away if you're obese or sedentary I suppose.
There is nothing wrong with eating potatoes, depending on your goals ofcourse. If you are trying to lose weight, I would probably stay away from them. If you exercise for hours per day and trying to maintain or even gain weight and your body tolerates them well, then there is nothing wrong with potatoes.
Same with dairy, some people handle it well, seek out good sources of dairy such is raw milk and yogurt and do great eating it.
