    Weird tasting coconut oil

    Primal Fuel
I bought some 365 organic unrefined expeller pressed virgin coconut oil yesterday. I just opened it up to cook some eggs and it smells great, only it tastes disgusting. It's like coconut mixed with vomit.

I've had various brands of coconut oil before and I've never had a problem...although none of them were organic

The expiration date says Dec 2012...should I return it and get a new brand or what?

Hmmm. Might be bad. But the unrefined oil does have a "taste" to it. Some don't like it.

I go with refined-- does better in high heat.

Ok thanks. It's weird because I generally like the coconut taste. I guess I will switch to the refined oil, or maybe go back to butter.

I bought the same brand with the same expiration date a few days ago and opened it the yesterday and it smelled....wrong, and the taste was off from what I've had from this same 365 brand and another that I've tried. I don't know if coconut oil can go rancid or if it can take on other flavors, but it was definitely not good. I took it back to Whole Foods and exchanged it for a different brand. I'll give it a try again down the road, but not anything that expires in Dec 2012.

I would definitely return it--something is wrong with it. Virgin pressed coconut oil should smell and taste yummy. I like the Nutiva brand.

I personally don't like refined coconut oil. Taste like moisturizer.

Being that the 365 brand is the Whole Foods house brand you probably won't need the receipt.

You won't need a receipt. Whole Foods has a really liberal return policy- if you don't like it, take it back. I just got credit for two open, half-eaten cans of cat food that made my cat sick, with another 4 sealed cans of the same brand.

You can try checking the lot number from the jar and getting a jar from a different lot, or you can try a different brand entirely. Usually the 365 stuff is pretty good, and they seem to take quality issues very seriously there, in my experience.

awesome, i am very happy. I just returned it and not only did they replace it with a new lot # but they also gave me another brand for free! Dr. Bronner's magic all-one organic.. I just tried some and it is delicious. No puke flavor in it

    thanks guys

oh and you guys were right, I didn't need my receipt either

I remember I found refined CO really off-putting after getting used to virgin, but there's really nothing wrong with it.
