    Unfit marathoner going grok

    Primal Fuel
    Hello, I am a marathoner who thought I was I was in great shape, until my health basically fell apart this year. When I first started running I ran at an easy pace... A lot... And felt great. First marathon completed in 3:30. Signed up for the day before and felt great after. I have a competitive side so I really started pushing my training. Rather than running and cross training by feel, I used a strict schedule and puhed every run I did. Just by chance when I first started running I was on a no grain, all fruits and vegetables, and fish diet.. Not sure why but I was.

    Then when I started training more I fell into the more(almost all) grains trap. Especially wheat. Well one thing led to another and it all came to a head about a month ago. I had some serious digestive issues.. Massive anxiety... Irritability and fatigue. I was afraid to run more than a few miles away from my house for fear of a bathroom emergency.. It was bad. Doctors and specialists could see there was something wrong but couldn't pin point anything. I tested negative for all major things and celiacs.

    At wits end I really reviewed my life.. What was different??? The only thing I could come up with was grains.. Wheat...

    I eliminated it from my diet and almost immediately my anxiety went away. My gi issues are fading but not gone. A gi doctor told me it might take a while to get better if there was a lot of intestinal inflammation.

    I bought the primal blueprint book and it really makes sense to me especially since I was basically on a primal diet before all this wheat..

    My goal here is to learn.. Especially about diet and hopefully share some of my running experiances while following the primal blueprint ways.

    But then, we all will. Marathons are not good for your body. Doing one or two a year won't make a big difference. I walked one half marathon. The group I trained with takes a very primal approach to training. Sprints twice a week. One increasingly long run or walk per week, slower than you want to go, with intervals. Cross-training and easy shorter walks or runs during the week. Rest days. That approach will make you healthier.

    I won't die because I run my long runs at 75 percent of my max heart rate. I think I will die if I keep eating wheat though.
