    Question High carb exersise vs. high fat

    Primal Fuel
    No matter how much fat I try to eat I always come to the conclusion that my performance suffers unless I eat carbs prior and post work out. Such as regular or sweet potatoes. Or even oatmeal on occasion (I know it's a grain). If I don't have carbs I'm dragging my feet during a work out and can even get an exercise induced headache.

    Are there any people out there who successfully exercise on protein/veg/fat? Has your performance improved on low carb/high fat diet? What am I doing wrong?

    My guess is your body is not adapted to burning fat for fuel

    I function just fine on less than 30g carbs per day. Usually I fuel/refuel with protein post workout.

    Went bouldering this morning. Breakfast, on the car ride, was an entire Lindt 90% chocolate bar, coffee w/ cream, and a scoop of whey protein. Hiked a mile uphill to the rocks, climbed really hard, and went home when the temperature started getting hot. When I got home I did a very short but intense workout of squats, deadlifts, and dumbell flys. Post workout meal was a haddock filet cooked in coconut oil.

    So basically, I did a lot of intense exercise today on basically high fat/protein, and performed very well (relatively speaking). This is pretty standard for me. In fact, the chocolate/coffee/cream/whey breakfast has become my go-to climbing breakfast because I always seem to perform well on it (and I feel light, in a way that I wouldn't with, say, a burger in my stomach).

    I think Mike Gager is correct, your body (for whatever reason) may currently be adapted to burning sugar for fuel as opposed to fatty acids. You'll have to provide more info if you want forum members to help you figure out why this is. What are the macro ratios of your current diet? How long have you been eating the way you are? How many times have you attempted these low-carb workouts? How often do you workout and what does your typical workout look like?

    If your an athlete and you don't eat significant amount of carbs your doing it to your detriment.

    I have been Paleo/Primal since June and have lost 65 lbs with an extremely lean low carb diet... my strength training sessions were and continue to be good but my endurance sessions (biking and rucking) suffered until I significantly increase my intake of fat in my overall diet. Post strength workout I use a beef isolate protien, 49 grams at a shot, a good BCAA and an avacado. It has taken awhile but my body has adjusted to burning fat over carbs. Post endurace session is usually fruit, nuts and leafy greens. It seems to be working well for me.

    Going low-carb ruined my workouts. Adding back in unlimited primal carbs fixed them, helped my mood, and caused near instant, significant fat loss w/o effort.

    I never had an issue being low carb (less than 50g/day) and being an athlete. However, I added carbs back in to help lose fat and it seems to be working well. Maybe I just didn't notice that the low carb was effecting me, but neither my lifting nor my LAX play suffered any. Part of it may be mental, or you could need them. Everyone is different.

    I've never been super low-carb, but I've found that simply adding a sweet potato as part of my dinner post-workout has a noticeable impact on recovery. I don't think large amounts of carbs/carb-loading is particularly necessary, but a reasonable amount of carbs focused post-workout to restore glycogen reserves are definitely useful in most cases. For the typical reader here as well as myself, that's probably a few sweet potatoes(or the equivalent in whatever starch you prefer) per week.

    When I first joined the forum, there was a dogma of ZC Carnivore-type eating. My workouts suffered and I did not feel satiated with so few carbs. Im not advocating that you go carb-insane, but increasing starches usually helps with performance if you're athlete. It is self-defeating to fear carbs and eat extremely high fat at the expense of your workouts.
