he functioned with the natural flow of the world. He had access to natural light at all times, I'm sure. If he had a hut, it probably let in a little light from the moon between thatching or whatev, but I doubt it was total darkness.

I did the army thing a few years back and the first time out in the bush on exercises I woke up thinking that someone was shining a spotlight in my eyes. It was the moon. Always found it annoying when trying to sleep. I reckon Grok would have found a cave.

It most certainly would have varied. There are times when I have been sleeping out in the mountains, and upon waking I can't see a damn thing; its pitch black. Other times the moon is so bright that I have to throw one of my arms over my head to fall asleep.
Sleeping out in the open might cause problems if you live in a habitat that has predators also.
