Has anyone read "Stale Food vs Fresh Food" by Robert S. Ford?
It's from 1969, but talks about the benefits of eating fresh food vs processed food. Mostly good stuff, except that he states bacon is bad due to its artery clogging properties.
I live by bacon. I eat it as a snack for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mark has stated how he loves bacon, too.
So, is bacon bad or not? Should I just not eat it everyday?

Did you read The Bacon Bummer?
Good quality bacon is a great tasting meat, but I only ever treat it as a condiment. I'll sprinkle bacon bits in my omelette, wrap my meatloaf in bacon and add a slice to a paleo burger. But it's never my main protein in any meal.
"Thanks to the combination of meat, calcium-rich leaf foods, and a vigorous life, the early hunter-gatherers were robust, with strong skeletons, jaws, and teeth." - Harold McGee, On Food And Cooking: The Science and Lore of the Kitchen
I agree. Bacon is a condiment. It is too processed to be a staple. I do love pastured pork and think pork belly is a little piece of fatty heaven, but beef, bison, game meat and fish are the best proteins in my opinion.
I get my uncured applewood smoked bacon from trader joes for breakfast every morning. I need something tasty to carry me through the day, but 2 packages of it last me the week. Once I finally lose the weight, I'll probably drop the bacon intake to about 1 package a week and focus more on grassfed beef.
Calling it a condiment is an insult to it's tastiness.
If you believe the press then eating a small amount of bacon every day (can't remeber how much) increases your chances of getting bowel cancer by 20%. Trouble is people do not know what this means and it looks like a frightening statistic. So to clear up these scaremongering statistics that the press band about I'll attempt to explain what they mean.
You have absolute and relative figures. So if 1 in 100 people get bowel cancer thats 1% absolute risk. If something raises the risk so that 2 in 100 get bowel cancer that is a 2% risk. HOWEVER 2 is 100% more in relative terms than 1 which leads to ridiculous screaming headlines.
so
I eat bacon every day and have stopped reading the papers.
Bacon, the supreme indulgence!LOL - that may actually be true. I'll refer to it as a supreme indulgence from now on
In the mean time, I'm losing weight eating bacon every morning. I'm on such a tight budget I have to eat condiments in the morning. You guys forgive me?
A $5.50 12 oz package of uncured bacon doesn't last long in our family of 6
Is it wrong to hide the good stuff from the kids?![]()
