I started eating primal on August 1, so I've been at least 80-20 (and mostly 90-10) for nearly the last two months. I noticed immediate weight loss and fitness gain when I started, but I have plateaued for the last couple weeks, which indicates to me that I need to start counting calories as well.
This has really been amazing for me. Two years ago I was 230 lbs. I got that down to about 195 just by religiously counting calories and walking 20 miles a day, 5 days a week (yes, really). At that point my weight loss stopped cold. I always felt starved, tired, weak and irritable due, presumably, to low, low calorie intake and high carb intake. I must have been going through an endless series of blood sugar spikes and crashes. I had myself convinced that I was, for genetic reasons, unable to run (I always experienced bad joint pain). Then I started Primal and barefoot running.
Now I am 180 lbs and I run 5 days a week. I started with Vibram Fivefingers, and now use Merrell Toughgloves (I do more trail running). I think what has impressed me more than the weight loss is that I feel good. I'm not starving. I'm not weak. I'm eating human-sized portions of foods that I like.
I look forward to seeing where I'm at in another two months.
